On Saturday evening in the Tenth ward of the city a wall collapse at two three story brick houses under construction buried seven people, including Allen Ruth and four of his sons. all were rescued alive, with serious but non fatal injuries. Injured include Ruth, Solloway, and Lewis Lynch. Charles Toth fractured a hip. Rescue work was complex but successful. cause attributed to foundation subsidence possibly frost or workmanship.

He served many charges across the peninsula, including Mt Pleasant and Claymont, and was a longtime Gazette friend. He leaves a wife and an adopted son at Annapolis Naval Academy. A second item notes a store and dwelling fire in Smyrna with significant losses and suspected arson.
