Berks County Railroad Sold at Sheriff's Sale for 9500
On Saturday afternoon last Georg F. Baer and Cyrus G. Derr bought the Berks County Railroad at sheriff sale for 9500 at the Court House with Deputy Wolff as auctioneer. Derr and Baer appear as purchasers, with a lease to Wilmington and Reading Railroad for 999 years on the stretch to High's farm, and a first mortgage of 1 6500 000. The sale includes all personal property and the road bed from Slatington to High's farm, though subject to lease and mortgage. The floating debt is about 500 000. The purchasers plan to organize a new company to hold title while continuing restructuring and eventual full creditor payment. The Meading Eagle and Harper's Weekly note the event.

Specially reported for the Gazette the Canal collision case against Brady and Company opened with judge Wootten guiding the jury. The sloop Helen carrying corn was drawn into a tug tow through the canal when a barge struck her, sinking the vessel, leaving questions of principal and agent, negligence, and contributory fault to be resolved by the jury.
