The Wilmette Community Chest urges readiness for the October 23 drive with a $15,000 budget. The Red Cross support is reduced this year while Arden Shore and Infant Welfare share equally in funds. A 15 year old’s suicide underscores need for camp programs.
A public meeting in Wilmette Village hall will discuss enlarging the sewer system south of Greenleaf avenue and east of Eighth street. The aim is to see if property owners want to negotiate with the RFC to secure funds and take advantage of a 30 percent gift offer. All residents and property owners are urged to attend.
Mrs Clement J Murphy of 1356 Greenwood avenue was named president of the St Francis Xavier school Parent Teacher Association to fill the unexpired term of Mrs Marshall V Kearney who resigned due to illness. The appointment was announced at the board meeting at Mrs Kearneys home last Monday. A general meeting is set for Friday afternoon October 20 at 2 oclock in the school auditorium to greet the new president and a program will follow the business session.
At the adjourned village meeting the board passed an ordinance vacating alleys in Block One First Addition to Kenilworth after debates over retaining an easement for utilities. President Dobbs, ill at home, expressed support for no easement which prevailed. Trustee Heinzen voted against, while a resubdivision plat for 50-foot lots was approved.
Wilmette public library staff and library board members plan to attend the American Library Association convention at the Stevens hotel in Chicago next week. Librarian Anne Whitmack will join a pre convention meeting at the University of Chicago. The Newberry Award luncheon for children’s literature will be held Wednesday, with Miss Mary Winner Hughes attending, as the convention focuses on library challenges amid a low mood.
The Illinois Municipal League will hold its annual convention in Peoria on October 19 and 20. Wilmette Village board members and department heads plan to attend at least one day in response to the urgent invitation.
The Wilmette Sunday Evening Club resumes its 19th season October 22 at the First Congregational Church auditorium. President W. Frank McClure notes future programs will feature eminent lecturers and musical groups, including Edgar A. Guest Bronson De Cou Ellery Walters Larry Gould Hendrik Van Loon Thomas Wells and the Russian Singers. George S. Dick will inaugurate with a travel film on Egypt Palestine Syria and Greece titled The Story of Religion with sound of the wailing wall bells and prayers.
Wilmette women sponsor a tag day in north shore villages on Monday October 16 to raise funds for the Chicago Children’s Bene fit league. The non profit drive supports fifty charities serving Way nurseries and child welfare hospital work with 100 percent goes to welfare work. Sponsors include Mrs. Robert S. Swain Mrs. F. L Hill Mrs. George West and Mrs. R. G Read.
Ned Wieland of Wilmette left Tuesday for Miami Beach Florida where he has accepted an advertising position with the Deauville hotel. He will be away until June.
