The 3 percent sales tax becomes effective July 1 in Illinois and Chicago area merchants adopt a bracket system for tax collection. Tokens of 1/4 mill will be issued for payments on sales of 5 cents or more, though not expected to circulate in Chicago.
Wilmette Fire Department reports five runs this month led by Fire Chief Walter Zibble. Three were minor building fires with no appreciable damage, one rescue assisted a locked out family, and one involved removing a cat from a tree.
The Streets and Alleys committee of the Village board will hold a public hearing in the council chamber on Friday evening June 28. They discuss repaving Wilmette avenue from Lake to Elmwood and Tenth street from Elmwood to Chestnut with gasoline tax funds. Only Wilmette avenue two blocks will be paved this year and streets must be widened to 36 feet to meet state requirements. Property owners and interested citizens are invited.
Union morning services to run through summer at Wilmette Baptist Church start June 30 at 11 o'clock led by Rev. John G. Hindley of First Congregational Church. Baptist and Congregational churches cooperate with Hindley preaching on Casting Out Devils. August and the first September Sunday union services shift to First Congregational Church with Dr. George T. D. Allison of the Baptist Church in charge.
Arrangements set for a quartet to sing at the 8 o'clock service at Wilmette English Lutheran Church on Seventh Street near Greenleaf during summer. Members include Mrs. M. R. Dressler soprano Mrs. J. H. Hopp contralto Jerome Nevins tenor and Frank Dorband bass. June 30 features Schnecker’s anthem I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.
The Wilmette Sunday Evening club executive committee meets at the First Congregational church in Wilmette this Friday evening to discuss moving meetings to New Trier High School auditorium and expanding activities to cover the north shore. They will elect a treasurer to replace the late E. Anderson. W. Frank McClure, the club president, will preside. The non sectarian group works with eight Wilmette churches and has run for twenty years bringing leaders to its programs.
The regular monthly Kenilworth Village board meeting has been moved from next Monday to Monday July 15. The board normally meets on the first Monday of each month.
Due to the Fourth of July holiday next week the July 4 issue deadline for all news and advertising matter is moved to Monday evening July 1. The change preserves the standard distribution schedule and reader advertiser cooperation is appreciated.
James B. Christerson of Wilmette and Richard W. McLaren of Winnetka, recent New Trier High School graduates, received Sterling Memorial tuition grants at Yale. Yale announced 31 such scholarships totaling 13,150 dollars for students entering Yale in September from 20 states.
The summer playground attendance is solid despite bad weather. Only Wattman Park operates this summer due to a reduced recreation fund, and the program runs for four more weeks.
North Evanston’s fourteenth annual Fourth of July celebration is set for next Thursday. The planning committee says this year’s spectacle will surpass previous ones with an 8 o’clock evening program at Dyche Stadium attracting crowds from Evanston and New Trier township communities.
A full schedule of athletic contests and novelty acts unfolds across parks and school grounds in North Evanston. morning golf and baseball events lead to horseshoe preliminaries, tennis and a novelty baseball game, with track and other events at Lincolnwood school. A daylight show precedes a 9 pm fireworks spectacle featuring a 100 piece band from St Marys Training School Des Plaines, clown acts, a wrestling bear and a trick donkey.
