Local track records broken at county fair last week

The county fair featured record breaking races with Lady Blanch pacing a 2 29 1 2 mile in the Thursday program and multiple fast heats across 2:30 classes. Kn\ight Express and Dan Woodford led the 2:30 class as three heats decided a $150 purse while Fay Finch and Pauline fired tight finishes in a 2:33 to 2:30 sequence. Saturday drew the largest crowd with John Gund and Lady Blanch in a three heat free for all for $200, ending with a 2:18 final. Grace A topped the colt race in two straight heats.

County Fair Attendance and Improvements Highlight 1916 Fair

The 1916 County Fair drew good crowds despite cold wind on Thursday and Friday, with Saturday the best weather and highest gate receipts in New London. Improvements included 3.5 acres added to Frost Park and a new cattle barn 88 by 60 feet costing 600 dollars, plus track refinements. Splendid Exhibits Interest Crowds At County Fair

The county fair drew large crowds over four days as New London residents dominated several divisions. John Akistrom and Thomas Nelson won blue ribbons for ten ear seed corn and related crops, while garden produce, melons, cabbage, potatoes, peppers, and butter displays received high praise despite a weaker corn showing due to a backward season. Farm clubs and rural schools offered strong entries, with Svea, Green Lake, Sunny Side, Golden Rod, and South Edwards placing in the farm club contest.

Poultry and livestock show highlights at Morris fair

The Minnesota county fair at Morris featured a strong poultry exhibit praised by Judge C A Smith as the finest he had seen in Minnesota. About 250 birds entered with a notable blue ribbon winner from J R Streeter of Montrose. The livestock section showed good animals but was hit by a late harvest season. A plan for a dedicated poultry building was discussed, while other notes mention prize hogs, Jersey cattle, and missing Angus entries. Local events include Priam Y P S meetings and Calderwood’s U S Senate talk on the Prohibition ticket. Sundberg faces surgery at the Swedish Hospital.

Sunburg to host state Republican campaign speech

Sunburg in Norway Lake township near Swift and Pope counties will host Minnesota state Republican campaign opening with U S Senator Koute Nelson as principal speaker next Saturday at 1 pm. Delegations from Willmar and surrounding areas are expected signaling strong party efforts to reach independent voters.
