War Relic Train Attracts Throngs In Northwest Visit

The War Relic Train drew huge crowds as it visited the Northwest for a three hour exhibit. William Ryder of the Ninth Federal Reserve Bank spoke on the Fourth Liberty Loan while Julius Brian and Trouper OConnor shared wartime experiences. A 25 piece detachment from the Sixth Naval Regimental Band performed to enthusiastic applause before the train moved on to Litchfield.

Red Cross Linen Shower seeks household towels and textiles

Special call from Red Cross Headquarters outlines Linen Shower donations for hospitals in need. Thousands Flock to Military Funeral for Private Hoglund

Immense crowds gathered at the Presbyterian church and surrounding streets to honor Private Enoch Hoglund killed in an auto accident on September 17. Revverts Tegnell and guest pastors led services in Swedish and English, with prayers, scripture, hymns, and music by the Willmar Band as mourners viewed the casket.

Willmar Soldier Enoch Hoglund Remembered At Military Burial

Enoch Hoglund born February 26 1896 in Willmar died after volunteering in 1917 when war began. The Home Guards gave a military burial with firing squad taps by Kenneth Wakefield and a grave service with Odette singing. Comrade Peter Plinck arrived too late for the funeral. both were early volunteers from Great Northern offices. The Willmar Tribune urges subscriptions to send papers to soldiers in camps.

Friday Record Day At County Fair Despite Weather

The county fair posted a record single day revenue while exhibits suffered from cold and rain. Receipts for Friday topped all previous days, with comparisons to 1918 and 1917 shown. a full fair summary will appear next issue. Alfred Weeks of Norway Lake is reported dead in France. his family learned of his heroic sacrifice in a war letter. The Iowa Homestead promotes farmer organization with a 1.00 annual subscription via Mr. J. W. Witham. Also noted are a large war quota from the county and a Svea Farmers Club meeting supporting Soldier Boys Emergency Kits.

County women praise generosity for Komfort Kit Fund

The local Woman’s Christian Temperance Union thanks county residents for support to the Komfort Kit Fund at the County Fair. A neat sum of $177.39 was realized to aid nearly that many boys. Dr. Roy L. Johnson, noted local dentist of Milan, received a telegram directing him to report for duty as lieutenant at Camp Dodge before September 30.

Night class offered in shorthand and typewriting

Willmar Seminary will organize a night class on Monday September 30 at seven o'clock. The program runs three evenings a week with a monthly cost of seven dollars including machine usage. Shorthand or typewriting alone costs four dollars per month with machines furnished at no extra charge.

Democrats Endorse Evans And Lobeck At County Convention

The Democratic County Convention met at the Court House in Willmar with light attendance. G P Karnand was elected chair and Wm Olson secretary. Delegates endorsed David Evans for governor and B E Lobeck for Congress. A county committee was elected with Olson, Karnand and others. Also noted are marriage notices for Miss Alice Wennerberg to Ewald Danielson and a moved death omission for Carl Mattson.

Ellen Mabel Skoglund obituary near Lake Florida

Ellen Mabel Skoglund eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Skoglund died Sept 18 after seven years illness with a nervous disease. Born April 24 1891 she was 27 4 18 old. Funeral held Florida Mission church with Rev Theodore J Paulson officiating and burial in Lake Florida church cemetery. She aided the sick and weak and was beloved by family and community.

Willmar Citizens Invited to Liberty Loan Signing

The city of Willmar is allotted 295000 for the Fourth Liberty Loan and residents are asked to sign for their allotments at Willmar banks on Saturday September 28th or Monday September 30th. County chairman C W Odell announced the Sixth Billion dollar Fourth Liberty Loan quota for Kandiyohi County of 1 045 000 with allocations to towns including Willmar Atwater Dovre New London and Roseville Ahead of the opening subscription day next Saturday local committees gathered in Willmar to finalize allotments and a visit by Supreme Court justices Brown Holt and Taylor was noted in the same city.
