Howe released on bail in non support case at Red Wing

Lloyd Howe, held in county jail for fourteen days since Sept 2 after arrest in New London on non support of his child, was freed on $150 bail last Friday to secure child payments. Six monthly back payments totaling $120 must also be paid. The Garfield School Parent-Teachers Association held its first meeting of the fall season last Friday. Next week the Central School Parent-Teachers will gather on the 20th.

Return of Leonard C Johnson from Duluth visit

Leonard C Johnson and family returned last week from a month long stay in Duluth and surrounding areas. They camped part of the time until cooler weather, and also visited Two Harbors and other northern points. In Duluth they met Rev. J Hoitfeld, now in Duluth but formerly of Atwater, along with many other friends.

Sower theme lecture at Bethel Lutheran church

Gilbert Bengtson student pastor at Christine Lutheran Lake Lillian gave an opening Luther League program sermon on The Sower. He linked Millet The Gleaners and The Angelus to the Bible parable, urging patient effort. Bengtson noted future aims toward foreign medical missions and shared vocal numbers.

Hand injury in washing machine incident at Svea

Mrs. William Lindquist of Svea crushed her hand in a wringer Tuesday morning. She was brought to Willmar Hospital, where doctors treated the injury and she remained under observation.

Wood strip pierces chest at Great Northern roundhouse

Christian L. Hanson, 52, from Mission Hill South Dakota, suffered a seven inch chest wound and lung injury when a lumber strip ripped from a circular saw at the Great Northern roundhouse. A wobbling saw blamed. partner Lawrence Hansen caught the lumber. Hanson was rushed to Willmar Clinic, surgery not needed yet, family notified.

Double Surprise for Gilbert Bengtson at Church Events

Gilbert Bengtson, student pastor at Christine Lutheran, received two surprise gifts totaling purses of money from congregation members. After a social afternoon at Frank Berg’s home, he hurried to Svea for a programme where the Svea church presented another purse. He plans to leave Saturday for Olivia then Nebraska to begin his second year medical studies at Chicago University.

Enrolments Rise as Schools Add Students

Additional students join both Junior and Senior High Schools with Monday adds. Senior High total nears three hundred while 60 students share seats in the Senior Assembly. Junior High gains push total to 327 and expected full occupancy of the 200 seat Junior Assembly is anticipated as term progresses.

Federated Flyers Over City After Sunday Flight

Two members of the Federated Flyers of Minneapolis piloted planes over the city on Sunday. One landed southwest of town and the other in the southeast district. The aviators spent Sunday night in Willmar and returned to Minneapolis Monday morning after performing at a county fair in Wheaton. Dentist Opens New Office In Local Building

Dr. M. B. Lundquist, formerly of Willmar, has opened dental offices in the Gpatairea of the "Bredok baildie" for the practice of dentistry. Fixtures and equipment arrived late in the week as the doctor expected to hire staff soon.

Farmers Cooperative Elevator Manager Hurt by Shaft Accident

Joby Sandin, manager of the Farm ers Cooperative Elevator Company, narrowly escaped severe injury Friday when his jacket was caught by a revolving shaft in the elevator’s upper room on Pacific avenue. The shaft tore his coat, gashed his right eye, and bruised his right arm. he was treated at Willmar Hospital and out of work for several days.

Seeking a game for high school football on Sept 30

The local high school athletic association works to arrange a football game for Saturday September 30. Hector declines citing inexperience and weak lineup while Olivia lacks a team this season. Benson has a Sept 30 game with Morris and Montevideo says no Willmar dates. Communications have been sent to Madison and Appleton as possible opponents. Litchfield agrees to play on November 4 at Willmar, and St Cloud is set to face WAga on October 7.

Dovre Singing Society to Perform at Fair Grounds Auditorium

The Dovre Singing Society of Minneapolis will give a concert at the Fair Grounds Auditorium on Sunday afternoon October 1 under Sons of Norway. Willmar observes Willmar Day at the 1922 Kandiyohi County Fair with city merchants closing for afternoon races amusements and exhibits. Morning exhibits open with a county spelling contest at 11 and Indrehus to address the crowd at 1. Afternoon races pay $450 in purses, four vaudeville groups perform, and horseshoe pitching awards $26 to winning teams.

Lightning strikes tree near Hanscom home in town

A bolt of lightning struck a large cottonwood on the Hanscom residence at Third Street West and Becker Avenue Sunday afternoon. It tore a deep gash down the trunk, burned fuses, knocked shingles from a cave, and sent splinters across the street over 50 feet away.

Progress on the new St. Marys Catholic Church continues with exterior stucco lathing nearing completion and interior work advancing. The chancel outline is finished, window frames for the East and West wings are in place, and a large basement will supply much needed social space.

Plenty of Ducks and Guard Rail Plan in County

Hunters flooded county sloughs Saturday attracting locals and visitors as license numbers rose. By the 15th 724 licenses issued at the County Auditor’s office, compared with 865 by opening day last year and 820 by Monday this week. A guard rail project between Atwater and Willmar will use plate sections where ditches are deep, Rose Bros. of Minneapolis to complete the contract this fall.

First Scrimmage Held Willmar H S Schedule

Willmar High School opened its first scrimmage under Coach McClaflin at the ball park. Three teams practiced with the squad reporting strong returning players. The opener is set for Saturday October 7 against St Cloud on St Cloud field. Last year Willmar defeated St Cloud 7 to 6 in a frat game. An attempt to schedule Sept 30 against Hector failed as Hector cited light material and inexperience.

The Mission church Young Peoples Society attended the District Convention at Dawson last week with speakers Rev. G. A. Youngstrom Rev. N. Franklin and Rev. C. G. Strom. Free puzzles for kids at Tribune fair booth

The Willmar Tribune received two large boxes containing 100 clever puzzles for kids and will distribute them at the Tribune booth during the County Fair. Each puzzle comes in a colored envelope with instructions, challenging youngsters to fit cardboard pieces into a correct design under Ben Franklin and assistants.

Man Arrested in New London on Desertion Charge

Sheriff Peter Bonde arrested George Hegdahl of Minneapolis in New London last Wednesday by telegraphic order of the Minneapolis Superintendent of Police. He is charged with desertion and non-support, and was taken to Minneapolis to face the charge. Hegdahl had deserted his wife, claiming fear of his wife turning on the gas prompted the move to New London. Also noted is a Bethel Ladies Society coffee social in the church basement next Thursday afternoon, Sept 28, with listed volunteers serving.

Belgian-born Mrs. Loeb Released in Habeas Case

U S Marshall took Mrs Rose Loeb from Kandiyohi County jail to Minneapolis for a habeas corpus hearing. Judge G E Qvale ordered her release to U S Marshal Smith, who acted under Attorney General Scott. Loeb, accused of theft in Tacoma including a malt case and a fur overcoat, faced a felony charge dismissed later in St Paul, with possible return to Tacoma or home in Belgium.
