Willmar to Host Three Day County Fair Soon

Kandiyohi County Horticultural Society and Willmar Street Pair Association organize a three day fair in Willmar on Sept 20 21 22. Farmers urged to enter fruits grains vegetables jellies canned goods and baked items with exhibits in Karnand warehouse on Benson Avenue. Notable talks by Dr J C Currier and Prof Samuel B Green.

Generous Fargo offer for Lutheran Seminary location

Rev M B Michaelson returned from Minneapolis with news of a strong Fargo bid for the Lutheran Free Church Ladies Seminary. Fargo offers use of part of Fargo Commercial College for a year with plans to establish the school on the first floor, while Willmar and Northwood compete. The Fargo committee will decide Sept 19, with Willmar still in contention if renewed efforts succeed. A fire on A H Sperry’s farm destroyed flax, a wagon, and sacks. no insurance, firefighters saved partial crops and nearby property. Local resident Wm Hackett visited the cities last week.

Entertained at Lawn Party hosted by Mr and Mrs Birch

Mrs Charles A Birch hosted a Friday lawn party for about a hundred city ladies. The event featured a well kept lawn with shade trees and flowers, comfortable seating, and gracious hospitality. Assistants included Mesdames Tanning Gillett Otterness Garretson and Misses Gladys Birch Mabel Sanderson Flo Julien Amy Hanscom Ethel Smith Vera Mossberg Agnes Nordin.

Struck by Train at Station A Narrow Escape

John Anderson a Great Northern employee who handles janitor duties at the passenger depot and mails transfers narrowly escaped serious injury when struck by an eastbound passenger train as it pulled into the station. He was knocked several feet, suffered facial scratches and bruises, was treated by doctors, revived at a railroad eating house, and remained at home for several days before likely returning to work.

Birthday Surprise at Odd Fellows Lodge

J W Kent celebrated his 43d birthday with an Odd Fellows surprise after a lodge session. About fourteen members attended, presenting a leather rocking chair, then hosted refreshments at his home arranged by his wife. The gathering included a German Whist party with twenty five ladies attending later.

Old Settlers Gone To Great Reunion

Kandiyohi county pays tribute to two of its earliest settlers Evan Railson and Henrik Wicklund who died within hours of each other. Both men joined pioneer life in Minnesota in the 1850s and endured trials from migration to frontier conflicts. Their funerals, held on Sept 7 and Sept 9, reflected the community’s esteem with church tributes and Old Settlers Association participation.

Millinery Opening Promises New Styles at St Cloud

Local notices list Mrs. Lucas and her daughter Helen traveling from Minneapolis to attend a fall millinery opening at St Cloud. The Youngberg Sisters plan a fall millinery display next Saturday inviting ladies to inspect their stock. Several couples are noted as wed and licensed in nearby counties with ceremonies conducted by Judge Nordin and other officials.

Willmar Extends City Delivery Depends on Preparations

An inspector will visit Willmar this month to consider extending city free delivery. Outskirts residents must complete requirements such as crossings and sidewalks before his arrival, as he will not extend delivery until all conditions are met.

Tally-Ho Campaign Opens Prohibition Tour With Dorsett

Prohibitionists launch a lively statewide campaign led by gubernatorial candidate Chas W Dorsett using a four in hand tally ho to rally support. The tour includes Oliver W Stewart and Wortendyke with daily open air rallies across Minnesota, Kandiyohi county dates in late Oct and early Nov, plus city and church venues. Jansrud, once of Willmar now Mayville, won first prize at the North Western Photographers Association exhibit in Minneapolis.

A daughter was born this morning to Mr and Mrs Andrew Ray. The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Brede Johnson passed away last Saturday night, one week old. An examination for Kerkhoven to Norway Lake rural mail carriers drew three applicants from Norway Lake. A Y P S meeting at the Swedish Lutheran church with Rev Peterson was announced for this evening. A grand ball is planned at Bonde hall Friday Sept 21 with Cafarelli Orchestra. Coffee service at Presbyterian church Friday Sept 14 from 3 30 to 7. The Williams family from Progress Clothing Cap is expected in Willmar this week. Miss Jessie Williams plans to open a vocal studio in Willmar. A covey of Chinese pheasants will be released south of Greenlake by the State Game Commission with local cooperation urged for protection. Funeral services for Brede Johnson were held Monday afternoon from the family residence, Rev Michaelson officiating, burial in Lutheran Free church cemetery.

Judge Qvale orders against establishing the proposed Lake Lillian ditch number 4 finding lack of court authority and no necessity.
