Sturdy Boys for Nation's Cause at Camp Grant Sendoff

Ninety five? eighty five new stars represented local boys leaving for Camp Grant Illinois on a service day. Crowds gathered at the Court House heard brief addresses by Rev G N Tegnell and Atty Chas Johnson praising liberty and duty. The Willmar Juvenile Band performed as a parade formed, with canteen fruit and farewell gifts as trains carried 28 Swift county and 20 Stevens County recruits and 124 North Dakota boys to training. Miss Elsie Blomquist joins Farmers State Bank Kandiyohi.

Gustavus Johnson resumes piano voice and harmony instruction at the Loney Block studio in Willmar and in Minneapolis. Three soldiers to Fort Snelling and Dunwoody Institute

A quota of three will depart tomorrow for Fort Snelling and five more next Tuesday. The three men are Paul Victor Polman Thief River Falls Oswald H. Rosenwald Pequot Minn and Thomas Sabin Estrem of Sask Canada. A general call for six to Dunwoody Institute Minneapolis was issued with a list of seven possibles including Godfrey W. Holzinger Willmar George Emerson Irving Denis Metcalf Burbank Martin Knutson Colfax William Sletten Willmar Sigfrid Paulsness Willmar and Harold Hanson Willmar. Lieut. Arthur R. Anderson son of Mr and Mrs Swan Anderson 508 Second Street East is en route to France after training in San Francisco. The marriage of Miss Gena Elmona Berg and Sergeant Major Charles R. Berry occurred Monday in Minneapolis. further details will follow.

Rummage Sale At Guild Hall During County Fair

A rummage sale will be held at the Guild Hall west of the Court House beginning Wednesday morning Sept 18 and continuing during the County Fair days. Kandiyohi County Fair Set To Open Next Week

The Kandiyohi County Fair opens Wednesday with strong hopes it will be one of the county’s best. Labor shortages challenge exhibitors, but a patriotic spirit aims to showcase wartime resources. Premiums will be paid by check after the fair to reduce staff strain. The Home Guards of Willmar assist with policing and parking while Red Cross operates refreshment stands. Prof. Harstad leads band music with a juvenile ensemble, and vaudeville shows from Western Vaudeville. The Little Giant Amusement Company and Corey will bring carnival attractions, and Eben E. Lawson oversees the big exhibition hall setup.

Alma Syvertson and Thorvald Rykken Wed at Solomon Lake

In a fern filled Solomon Lake church setting Alma Syvertson and Thorvald Rykken were married last Thursday afternoon with Rev J N Andersen conducting. Marie Berg played the wedding march, bridesmaids and groomsmen accompanied the couple, and a reception for about 150 followed at the bride’s home with a three course dinner in a tent. The bride, a Willmar Seminary graduate and longtime teacher and organist, and the groom, son of KT Rykken, will reside in St Paul after October 15.

Westlund Writes to Mother From Hospital in France

Arvin Westlund of Atwater reports to Base Hospital No 20 in France with unknown wounds. A telegram dated September 1 told his mother Mrs. Olof Westlund that Alvin had been missing since August 6. A hospital letter last Friday gave no details.

Westlund brothers serve in WWI from Montana and Washington

Pvt. Arvin Westlund was drafted at Ryegate Montana and left Oct 3 1917 for Camp Lewis. He sailed overseas May 6. He is the second of Mrs Westlund’s three sons in the war. Elder son Moren joined last winter, trains in Fort Totten Coast Artillery. Youngest Virgillus serves in the Navy in European waters.

County's Liberty Loan quota tops one million dollars

County Chairman C W Odell set a Friday meeting at the Court House for all Liberty Loan committees to plan the Third drive. Henry Deutsch of Minneapolis will speak, with the county quota around 1 045 000 based on a six billion loan, and a public address at the Kandiyohi County Fair at 2 30. Old Walgren Farm sold for 135 an acre to a Nebraska buyer. Goranson Farm sold for 10 800 to Jake W Miller. Nelson farm sold for 15 000 to Edwin L Engstrom. Miss Anna Hawkinson visited Miss Lillian Nelzon between trains.
