The hearing on Carl Andersons death concluded with Joseph Franks bound over to the grand jury. Witnesses included Detectives Hallowell and M. Reed of St Paul and several locals connected to the scene. Also noted are wedding anniversary festivities and local business changes on Third Street.
Frankfort Michigan attended the funeral of Chris Warwand held August 30. He was about eighty years old and is survived by his children Bondy Visiting Hare and Alice Ethel Bondy. Alice Ethel Bondy of Battle Lake arrived for a few days' visit with Miss Lois Sanden and will travel to Minneapolis to visit brother Edgar M. Bondy. John Holmdal has purchased a residence on Third Street West from J. A. Hedin for 6500 dollars.
The Willmar Opera House Company sold the Dreamland theatre to Alfred O. Opheim of Jackson for 28000 dollars. Opheim is I T Cramer’s son in law and a Jackson stock farm owner. Crosby family had run the house since its early days and Mrs. Crosby will assist Opheim in managing after the transfer.
Miss Helen Margaret Tallman wed Willard Ware Wilson of Hillsboro Ohio in a ceremony at the Tallman home. The service was conducted by F H Oehler of St Luke's Episcopal Church with music by Kelsey's orchestra. A reception and dance followed at the Masonic Hall with about 100 guests attending.
The Tribune notes a large picnic at the C A Wennerberg farm 5 miles north of Kerkhoven and 6 miles northeast of Murdock in Hayes Township Swift County. Former Minneapolis mayor Thomas Van Lear will speak on a free press. Hayes residents are funding a new Northwest newspaper and have contributed about 5500 dollars.
Obituary notices report the death of Mrs Andrew J Goder at her daughter’s home on August 20 1919 after seven years bedridden born October 1 1829 in Rammer Vermland Sweden she came to the US in 1882 living in Willmar and later New London deeds list five living children and numerous grandchildren funeral details follow. Anna McDermott of Kandiyahi died recently age 35 funeral held at St Patrick church Kandiyahi reference to survivors and pallbearers follows. Also brief items mention a rummage sale by the Presbyterian church Social Union near the county fair and local social notes about residents visiting family and attending the state fair.
Religious listings detail Baptist Presbyter ian Lutheran and Catholic services with times. Sermons themes include The Place of the Public School in The Republic and Substance. Notes on choir rehearsals, confirmations, Sunday schools, and lay meetings follow for St Luke's St Mary Kandiyohi Swedish and Norwegian services and catechism sessions.
John G Porter a Civil War veteran and longtime resident of Gennassen township and Atwater village died last Saturday after a prolonged illness. Born May 1 1843 in Kronoborg Sweden he immigrated to America in 1854 settling at Chisago Lake Minnesota. He enlisted in Company D Phild Minnesota in 1861 and served until 1865. After lumbering work he moved to Tennessee in 1889 then retired to Atwater thirteen years ago continuing involvement in local public affairs.
Charles Porter longtime community official and secretary of Acton and Genesee Mutual Insurance died aged after many years of service in town offices and school affairs. He married Mary Erickson in 1871. she died in 1889. Surviving children Gustave and Mabel, plus a half brother and three half sisters. Funeral held at Swedish Lutheran church Atwater with Rev. LeVander officiating and Civil War veteran pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
In the Willmar Tribune reply Edward Hanson denies selling milk below test and notes eighteen years of clean records in Willmar. He recalls a August 1 1918 price increase from 24 to 28 cents per gallon and 28 cents per quart for coffee cream, saying profits cannot cover feed costs. The notice mentions church events and local residents visiting Graceville and St Paul with teaching posts and old friendships.
The east side of Fifth Street between Benson and Litchfield avenues changes hands. Spicer Land Co. corner sold to First National Bank, planning a block next summer with frontage on Litchfield and Fifth Street. Old post office corner sold to Henry Morrell who will move his store in. Johnson & Johnson, buyers of Chase, acquire A. N. Lewis corner and occupy Selin building, with plans for a new block next summer. Anderson Land Co. leases Morrell space, moves Paul Hedin’s cycle shop to Third Street this fall, and uses vacated space as a private garage.
D D Dayton of the Dayton store Minneapolis sent a wedding gift to Mrs Helen Tajiman a bride of this evening by aeroplane from Minneapolis at one o clock this afternoon. The pilot was Mr Miller and the mechanic Mr Bricker. The aeroplane was owned by the Curtiss Northwest Aeroplane Co Fair and the Schools Kandiyohi County Fair opens Wednesday of next week and continues thru Saturday High school sessions run 8 am to 12 40 and grade school 9 to 2 30 Friday both high school and grades 9 to 12.
Dr A Vik of St Paul arrived Monday evening for a week long visit with relatives in this city staying with his uncle George Otterness. He has been practicing in a hospital in St Paul and will attend a home talent play by St Agnes Guild at the Opera House around October 15 with rehearsals starting soon. Don’t miss Johnson and Johnson Co removal sale opening September 15 at 8 am.
A Curtiss J-1 delivery plane from Powers Merchantise Company and the Witts Market House of Mill City landed near the Murray farm southeast of the city at 4 45 pm Tuesday. The flight from Minneapolis to Litchfield took 30 minutes, then 20 minutes to Willmar. The airship proceeded to Benson Morris and Wheaton, planning to join county fair activities at Wheaton before continuing to Willmar. Goods on board included an overcoat for a Wheat on resident. Lieut. Rask, of the Federated Fliers based in Minneapolis, piloted the craft, part of a fleet of 15 planes.
