A nostalgic poem by E. E. Kiser in Chicago Record-Herald recalls autumn scenes of cider, pumpkins, cornfields, and memories of rural life. The speaker wanders through favorite locales, wondering if the trees, mills, and streams remain as they once were, and whether friends notice the distant journey away from the countryside.
Ivar Johnson, a carpenter in this city for about two and a half years, departed today for Sweden after being honored by boarders and fellow carpenters who hosted a farewell. He arrived in the country two and a half years ago, worked briefly for A. Lundin to Fablun, then joined Contractor Bjorsell. He boarded at Nyquist & Tullberg's, where last night companions staged a farewell including a speech by Pete Hoglund and gifts of money and five pearl handled kolfe.
Frank Connelly remains missing since August 5 with no information on his whereabouts. A $25 reward is offered for tips. Selmer Tallakeen Rudolph and Herman Eastrem left for Decorah Luther College to resume studies. Harry C Heath joins High School science staff after Cornell training. Mrs Elmquist and daughter clarify Watertown Minnesota residence. Rev Tolo and family travel to Engle Lake then attend a funeral in Brooten. Mrs I Markhun departs for Rai Wing for iron work duties.
The state board of pardons granted clemency to B. K. Salvorson who was jailed for misappropriating funds from Appeton State Bank. The pardon followed medical testimony that he suffers a lingering disease and may not survive if kept at the penitentiary.
I C Tollefson returned Thursday from a three weeks trip to the far west visiting cities in Oregon and Washington. He reports prosperous country, delightful climate especially in Washington, good water, and healthy residents. He compared local cases of consumption with Minnesota and found few in the west. He recommends a few weeks layoff to visit western places for the climate and scenery.
Carl J Carlson and John Swanson of Wamre clash over alleged threats amid warrants and arrest. Carlson swore out a warrant in justice court after Swanson threatened to wound maim and kill him in St Johns. The case goes to Judge Oberweger with trial set for September 11.
A Minneapolis Cos Commission company plans an office here once a suitable location is found. Copper wire is being strung rapidly with three crews between Minneapolis and the city. Until then business proceeds through a local wire. The Luther an Free church Ladies Aid meets Wednesday at 3 PM with coffee cake and ice cream for sale to raise funds for the church land. A Iowa landssekers group toured nearby farms with Anderson Land Co. Miss Beseley Hyer returns from Laverne with her aunt Mrs. L. O. Cosa visiting for about three weeks. Butter exhibitors at the State Fair include L. Sorenson Kandiyohl with 6 and 0 and Haliqatat Norway Lake with 944. Edna Geer to teach eight months in district 67 Burbank.
Mrs John Jacobs three miles southwest of town suffered severe injuries when a sickle amputated her left foot after the mower team moved while her husband and son searched for a line. She was taken to Herman Swiers home and treated by Dr McMahon with hopes no amputation needed though lifelong disability expected. The Raymond News reported the incident and noted other local notes from Willmar area.
The American yacht Reliance defeated Shamrock II in three straight races securing the international cup. English interest grows, with talk of a second series if crews are exchanged to test fault lines. Also noted is Thomas C. Hough’s Cadillac record run to Northfield, Minnesota covering 51 miles in under three hours.
A new stock yard at New London is forming with yard fittings delivered for grading and construction. The yard will sit north of the track by the hand-car house, as crews prepare to complete the spur and platform scales for weighing cattle. Local notes include a jail sentence for misconduct and movements of residents Alma and Fern Mikkelson from Estevan to Minneapolis for study, plus church and business developments in Eagle Lake and Benson.
A mail clerk misplaced a package of letters on a passenger train between here and Pennock. Foreman Robert Anderson stored them safely, and the clerk rewarded him when the letters were found. The clerk later traced the letters to Pennock and continued searching from St Paul.
Joseph Thomas a pioneer of Kandiyohi and Meeker counties died at Aberdeen South Dakota on August 24 1903 at his son John Thomas home He was born in Cardiff Wales aged 85 and came to America as a young man He moved from Kandiyohi near Diamond Lake to Litchfield then Dakota in later years Survived by widow and one son remembered as a stock rakeer of integrity and temperate habits by communities he traversed
The New London Times notes the death of James Careless on Monday August 24. Once an longtime resident of Burbank, he moved with his son Thomas to the British domain about a year ago. Local friends regret his passing and will miss him.
Estrem and wife from New London traveled through here on Thursday en route to Minneapolis with six fresh air children. The group enjoyed New London hospitality and would return if possible. The Eagle Lake church Young Ladies society hosts an ice Dream social at J B Nygaard’s on Sept. 6 to support the mission fund. If weather fails, the event moves to Tuesday. Emme Ackerland of Maynard visits friends before Dixon, Illinois, to attend Dixon Business College. Axel Brown, formerly at Johnson Moline & Co., will now collect for New London Milling Co. on Sept. 15. The Ladies Aid of the Lutheran Synod will meet Thursday at Mrs. Markbus’s home with coffee and cake.
