Slide of Sand Trench Disaster Claims One Life

John Ogren a 36 year old city resident died when trench wall collapsed trapping him under heavy sand about 3.5 miles west of Atwater. He had dug the trench alone. a passing gang member found the partially filled pit and others freed his body after exacavation. Dr. Anderson stated suffocation and sand pressure caused death. Burial rites to be held in Minneapolis with Melvin Samuelson and Kuute present. A separate report notes an old barn fire near Nichols Hicks McNairy wholesale house, started by a hot stove, burning the playhouse structure to the ground.

Amendments on Pink Ballot Split Voters in Kandiyoh County

The county faces a sharp split on the Pink Ballot amendments with a large adverse vote possible despite boosters’ unity. A failure would trigger the quarter million dollar bond payments approved by the County Board, while Amendments No 2 8 and 4 garner broader support. Amendment No 4 would allow assessing railroad property for local improvements, a point of interest for Willmar and Kandiyoh county. Voters should note that not voting counts as against. Miss Florence Pallin departs for Raymond to resume teaching duties.

Old Veteran of 61.65 S in Arctander

The sad death of John Georgeson was reported last Friday October 21 at his old home in Arctander township. A Norwegian born Civil War veteran and early Kandiyohi County settler, he came to Minnesota in 1870. He served in Co A 7th Wisconsin Infantry and spent later years farming near West Lake Church. He leaves wife Anna Abrahamson and five children, with funeral held October 25 1920.

Samuel Paulson Dead at Ortonville

A phone message to Mr B F Fink in New London reports Samuel Paulson shot himself last night in Ortonville. He was born at the Paulson home in Arclander and worked at Swenson and Broberg's in New London before becoming manager of the Ortonville Co operative store. The family, including Mrs Paulson and children Kermit and Brunhild, receives countywide sympathy.

High School Takes Over Lyceum Course

The local High School assumes the Redpath Lyceum Circuit entertainment series due to Legion financial difficulties. Four concerts will be held in the High School auditorium with net proceeds used for stage scenery and equipment. Tickets 1.50 for adults and 1 for students. Refunds offered for earlier paid amounts. Seven Crippled County Children to Be Helped

Public health nurse Miss Inga Imsdahl begins work in Kandiyohi county schools visiting districts 61 11 48 76 62 61 and 44. She made 30 home visits and spoke at public meetings aiding seven crippled children to enter state schools in Minneapolis. Treatments offered at the hospital are free for families unable to pay.

Preus and Collins to Visit Willmar on November 1

Jake Preus and Corporal Collins will be in Willmar for an afternoon appearance on November 1 as announced in the Republican Gazette. A city meeting is planned at an unspecified location with efforts underway to attract a large crowd.

Willmar Dominates Glenwood In Sunday Football Clash

Willmar defeated Glenwood 34 to 0 in a Sunday game marked by Willmar’s strong line and smooth defense. Hartwick and Peterson scored for Willmar with Christian adding two rushing TDs. Lloyd Peterson also kicked a goal. The Glenwood offense was held in check as the visitors seized control early and never relinquished it.

A Very Profitable Teachers Institute at Willmar Courthouse

A large teachers institute held at the Willmar courthouse last week concluded Saturday. County Superintendent led sessions with Miss Anna Swenson, Miss Bertha Atkins, Miss Ellen Nye, Miss Emma Krefting, Miss Anna Coleman, and Mr. R. H. Giberson contributing expert talks on health, club work, and public education. About 109 teachers attended, with a patriotic league formed and new officers elected.

Willmar Registers Over Two Thousand Voters in Eight Precincts

In Willmar, 1090 women and 300 men registered, totaling 2494 on the registration lists. Heaviest turnout in downtown Second and Third Wards with precincts reporting 450 and 448 voters. New registrants numbered 1380, with female registrants at 1090. Promoters seek out of town eleven for next Sunday football game, with Litchfield questioned. A joint musical program by Junior and Senior High School glee clubs is set for Friday at 1:20 pm open to the public.

Willmar Post Office Sees Parcel Business Grow

The Willmar post office reports a rise in local parcel post activity from 1919 to 1920. Received packages climbed to 3,750 in October with 2,546 at general delivery and 1,260 via special parcel delivery begun Oct 1. Mailed parcel counts rose from 1,134 to 1,680, with weight increasing from 4,677 pounds to 9,307.
