Hearing on Judicial Ditch No 1 continues to next October

District Court continued the Judicial Ditch No 1 case, a $2.6 million drainage project affecting about 800 parties across Kandiyohi and Meeker counties with 85 miles of open ditches and 760 miles of tile. Judge Daly presided. T O Gilbert and L D Barnard represented petitioners. E P Peterson and J M Freeman represented objectors. The plan covers about 100000 acres, mainly in Kandiyohi, with Big Kandiyohi Lake and Lake Lillian to be kept at current levels. The engineer B B Gardiner of Benson prepared the plans.

Willmar Doctor Attends American College of Surgeons

Dr. B. J. Branton of the Willmar Clinic left last Saturday for Boston to attend the American College of Surgeons meeting. He was elected to membership last year. Surgeons from across the United States gather to exchange advances in surgery ongoing during the past year. He will return to Willmar on Monday.

Ladies Aid Sale at Syne Mission Church

The Ladies of the Syne Mission church will hold a sale of fancy articles in the church basement on Friday evening November 3rd starting at 7 30. Refreshments will be served after the sale. All invited.

Treated Orphans by Girls and Mothers in Gift Drive

Seven girls from Willmar along with their mothers arranged a charity visit to the Orphans Homes last Saturday. They raised about ten dollars through candy sales and donated it, while mothers prepared a large spread of lunches for the orphans. Wagon Demolished In Collision Near Benson

Axel Swenson of the Nels Sletten farm collided his Ford with a Benson man’s wagon. The wagon was demolished and swerved him over a fence landing unharmed. Horses fled and the Ford radiator was badly battered.

Confirmation at Vinje Synod Lutheran Church

A class of nineteen youths was confirmed last Sunday during morning services at Vinje Synod Lutheran Church. Rev. Arnt Vaaler led catechization and exams with six questioned in Norwegian and the rest in English. Certificates were awarded to both Norwegian and English speakers, including Robert Swenson and Irving Olson among others. it was the smallest class Rev. Vauler has confirmed at Wiltmar, following a 20-student year prior.

Willmar Mandamus Case Heads to Judge Daly

Henry G. Young's mandamus case against the City Council of Willmar opened before Judge R. T. Daly. Attorneys for the American Legion of St. Paul and for Young argued over whether 1919 law controls appointing ex service men, with briefs due in twenty days before Daly rules. The matter may escalate to the Supreme Court. meanwhile the city pays expenses and delays persist.

Kandiyohi County Horseshoe Tournament Planned Next Sunday

Plans for a Kandiyohi County residents horseshoe tournament at Pennock include 16 team signups by Oct 28 and a 2 PM start on Oct 29. Teams of four play three games of five points each with a 2 cent entry per player shared among the four winning teams. Eight courts await, under National Association rules, with coffee and doughnuts offered for local club fundraising.

Fancy Article Sale At First Baptist Church

The Philathea Class of the First Baptist plans a sale of fancy articles next Saturday afternoon October 28 in the church basement. Supper starts at n o'clock for 40 cents, featuring escalloped potatoes meat balls creamed peas beet pickles Parker House rolls and dark bread with pie a la mode and coffee. Everyone invited. Meanwhile local youth Joseph Feleen, studying in Mankato Minnesota, received a telegram offering a position with Bankers Supply Co of Chicago and left October 17 to start work. Selby Ogren broke his arm cranking a Ford last Friday, taken to Willmag Clinic where Dr A F Branton performed xrays and reduced the fracture. Fred Tevick of Minneapolis formerly Irving was sentenced to six months in jail after conviction for the sale and possession of liquor. Judge Mortiss showed no mercy for liquor offenses.

Surprise Party for Mrs Pete Dalop

A surprise party was held at Mrs. Pete Dalop s home on Friday October 20th for her birthday anniversary. About twenty guests attended and late in the afternoon refreshments were served. Guests had brought gifts for the celebrant.

Thieves Threaten Two Private Garage Break-ins

Two garage entries were attempted at private residences of Peter Bassebo and B. K. Van Dyke late Sunday night. The thieves fled when a neighbor’s car headlights shone on them, leaving only minor damage to a lock.

Rally Draws Large Crowds In Willmar Political Push

Paul J. Smith of Samuel Gompers' circle and Magnus Johnson of the Farm Labor ticket addressed a crowded Masonic basement meeting in Willmar sparking a debate on organized labor, farm misery, and bi partisan politics. Johnson pledged state economy and fewer inspectors while opposing the state police. Mayor Lawson led the session with State Senator candidate R. C. Sletten addressing public welfare. A Bethelmalen Society food sale and a St Mary’s church bake sale were announced for the coming Saturday.

Willmar Faculty Attends Minnesota Educational Association

The Willmar Public Schools faculty, about fifty instructors, will attend sessions of the Minnesota Educational Association at the St Paul Hotel and City Auditorium. Miss Emma Krefting of the Willmar Normal Training Department will speak Friday forenoon at Knights of Columbus Hall. Classes close at noon today, giving students a vacation for the remainder of the week. The convention runs Wednesday evening to Friday with Mrs Geo Brohaugh Mia Arthur Erickson and Mrs McClaflin also attending.

Catholic Church Dedication Set for November 8

The new Catholic church will be dedicated on Wednesday November 8 Archbishop Dowling will be present along with visiting clergy from surrounding towns Mass was held in the Majestic theatre for two months while the church was completed The building measures 86 feet long and 44 feet wide in the transepts Minor finishing work will finish in two weeks after the dedication plans

Bicycle Smash in Auto Accident Tuesday

Earl Peterson escaped serious injury when his bicycle was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Herman Nelson at the corner of Litchfield Avenue and Fourth Street. Nelson slowed and braked hard, stopping within a few feet after the collision. Peterson was uninjured though his new bicycle was destroyed.
