Carl Stam is Dead and Remembered as Eccentric Swede
Carl Stam of Sec 17 New London died at his homestead last Saturday evening after a period of declining health following his wife’s death. Born October 27, 1833 in Levene parish Vistergotland Sweden, he arrived in 1859 settling at Carver Mina and helped establish area schooling and church roles. Surviving daughters Hilma Kunze Anna Berglund Mary Kulseth Charlotte Stam, thirteen grandchildren. Funeral held Tuesday at home with Rev. A. F. Sosstrand. interment Lebanon cemetery.

A Willmar census recount reduces the city population to 4064 after identifying 118 uncounted residents in the second ward. John A. Johnson led the effort, finding 139 omissions citywide and noting the incomplete earlier tallies. Names of residents omitted include Garland, Arnold, Downs, Welch, Johnson, and several others.

WIGM Dive Disaster At City Street Fair
A ten year old, Eugene Nelson, was hurt while imitating high diving at the street fair. He fell from a tree and struck an iron bolt, cutting a deep wound to the bone near the forehead. He was treated by Dr. Johnson and returned home with hopes of quick recovery. Also notes a coffee fundraiser at Episcopal rectory and a boxcar wreck during yard switching. Sanatorium for Consumptives Breaks Ground Near Lake Caas
State board of control will begin building an 1800 50 000 dollar sanatorium near Caas Lake Walker next spring. A caretaker’s house will be erected this fall to oversee grounds. The fireproof main building will house dining hall administrative quarters and room for thirty six patients with hopes to add cottages for open air care. Physicians expect patients by next fall to impress the legislature with the hospital’s benefits and justify larger future appropriations. The site offers scenic lake views and surrounding timber country.

William Owen, theater favorite at Willmar, will be sent tonight to Shakespeare's tragedy Othello with Iago played by Owen and McConnell as Othello. The company supporting Owen this season is strong and a large house is expected.

Fire Regults Fatally In Minneapolis Fire
A disastrous fire on the Nicollet Seventh Street block in Minneapolis morning hours claimed Lemuel A. Minton life. Minton died of heart failure induced by fright during the blaze that started in Mrs C Camp’s sashdl floor room. Firemen and bystanders aided evacuees as Minton, a Commercial Club clerk and former Brunswick hotel proprietor, collapsed en route to safety. Mrs Camp and others were rescued, with several injured and a small property loss projected under $500. Funeral rites were held at the late home and remains sent to Litchfield.

A party of about fifty Swedish Methodist friends surprised Rev. and Mrs. G. A. Johnson at their Monongalia avenue home on Monday. Rev. G. Nelson and Presiding Elder Farrel, visiting for a conference and fundraising, joined local members for a warm reunion. The Johnsons, former pastor and wife, received a rocker and purse as tokens, with refreshments and social fellowship following. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. John Brandt and sister Mrs. Anderson of Murdock.

The Western Minnesota Teachers Association held a largely attended meeting in Granite Falls last Friday and Saturday. The Excellent program was carried with slight changes. Willmar’s delegation, led by Supt. Tanning and Co Supt. Dobbyn, plus principal Hillebow and Miss Thea Rollefson, attended along with twelve teachers. Kandiyohi County and Woallgres were represented. next Thursday Woallgres will preach. Sunday services, including communion, are planned for Nov 5. Miss Clare Nybakke plans relocation to Calumet Michigan to head a dressmaking business in the Gerteton Silk Co. department, leaving Monday evening.

MATHIAS HAL L BERG DIED IN MAMRE SETTLEMENT
Mathias Hallberg an early Mamre settler died Monday October 16 from complications of old age. Born in Lifland Baltic Russia about 82 he sailed to Sweden and later married there. He came to the United States in 1869 and settled on a farm in section 30 Mamre Township. Survived by his wife who preceded him in death, and son Oscar Hallberg who remains on the homestead, the community mourns his passing after a long hard life. Services noted with local church plans and regional notices follow.
