Tragedy on Long Lake as hunter capsizes boat

One man died and two others were rescued when a small hunting boat capsized near Long Lake in Willmar area early Sunday. Albert Bastien of Little Falls died in the lake. Ralph Forsberg and Robert Howes were pulled from the water and saved with help from shore volunteers and a nearby farm family. Maintained search efforts continued Sunday and Monday with local divers and neighbors aiding in hopes of locating the missing body before the burial planned in Little Falls.

Dairy Show Attended by Local Couples in Minneapolis

Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Rodegeb and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tallakson with family drove to Minneapolis on Saturday to attend the Dairy show. They met Tallakson’s mother and sisters who once lived in Willmar and toured Woodshore Dairy Farm seeking a pure bred Holstein site.

Church Jubilee Set At Bethania Long Lake Oct 29

Bethania Long Lake church hosts a three day event starting Oct 27 at 10 30 am with Samtale Mote led by Rev Lunde. Willmar Meets Madison Saturday in Big Football Showdown

Willmar high school football fans brace for a top clash with Madison after both teams posted 3 0 records. Madison franks high scoring games while Willmar looks to prevail on home turf in what may be season’s best matchup. Also a Benefit Dance is planned Monday at the Odd Fellows with proceeds aiding striking railway shopmen. Admission 75 cents and an extra lady 25 cents.

San Diego man visits brother in Northwestern Exch

Benjamin Williams of San Diego arrives from Canada for a week at his brother John Williams's home, manager of the Northwestern Telephone Exchange. Williams runs a black fox ranch at Prince Edward Island and has just returned from business there before planning to go back to San Diego via Willmar.

Truant Indian youths return to Wahpeton after Willmar encounter

Chief of Police Ole Westgard confronted four Wahpeton Government School students aged 17, 16, 16, and 11 in Willmar on Monday. The youths, who rode freight to town and fled toward Campbell Avenue, told varied stories before revealing they wished to return home to their families. They were transported back to Wahpeton yesterday after authorities were notified.

Breaks Foot at Freight Depot in Serious Injury

Alden Haktberg, a transfer platform worker at the freight depot, dropped a heavy freight piece on his right foot, breaking several bones and sustaining cuts and bruises. John Foster Injured After Car Drag Incident

John Foster an employee of the McKusick company narrowly escaped serious injuries when struck by a car and dragged along pavement east of town Tuesday morning. He was treated at the Willmar Clinic by Dr. B J Branton for multiple facial and leg contusions, with no bones broken and Foster counting his luck.

Willmar Faces Minneapolis Eleven Next Sunday

Willmar City Team prepares for a home contest against St Louis Park and Eddy Eleven of Minneapolis on the Willmar gridiron. The locals seek a victory after recent wins over Benson and Madison, aiming to climb football standings and gain further engagements with Twin City teams. The Oaks and the Libertys from Minneapolis had offered games, but dates were not settled.

Pennock Wins Second County Horseshoe Tournament

The second county horseshoe tournament was held Sunday on August avenue drawing a large crowd. Sixteen teams competed from Pennock Willmar Svea Spicer and Atwater. Pennock's Ernest Berglunas and Ben Hultgren won first prize of 7.20 with 50 cent admission totaling 16 in receipts four prizes awarded 7.20 4.80 2.40 and 1.60. Group elimination featured four groups of four teams leading to final games. Second prize went to Andrew Nordstrom and Albin Wahlstrand. third to Victor Bergquist and Ernest Nelson. fourth to Swenson and R Tatting of Svea.

Old Ladies Attend WCTU Organized Social Event

About 35 elderly women from our city enjoyed a Wednesday afternoon hosted by the local WCTU. Mrs Ivee opened her home and arranged lunch with help from a WCTU committee, providing transport and programing for guests aged 73 to 89, with Mrs Lundgren noted as the oldest. The gathering reminded all that aging comes to everyone and they are valued.

Misa Mary Tew, employed at Kandlysh County Bank for four years, resigned recently with effect last Saturday. She departs for Minneapolis tomorrow to join her sister Katherine Tew and will visit various places before starting new duties in Minneapolis.

Spicer Road Re-Surfacing Completed in Spicer

The Spicer Road, Trunk Highway No 4, near Spicer, was resurfaced by a state crew finishing last Saturday after starting August 15. Highway Superintendent C M Mathies oversaw a fifteen man team with S J Reader Company of Minneapolis hauling gravel from Eagle Lake. Eleven miles were improved at an estimated cost of about eleven thousand dollars. The road will be maintained, with patrols to keep it in good condition through spring.
