Union Telephone asks for Willmar franchise clash

The Union Telephone Company seeks village rights to enter Willmar with a line and up to two phones, offering to share poles but facing strong opposition from the council which fears street encumbrance and little public gain. Union plans extended lines to Atwater, Irving, Harrison, Green Lake and Dovre, aiming to connect farmers and compete with the Willmar exchange.

Proposed City Charter Outlined for Hew City Government

The Charter Commission submits a draft charter to President Tyler and, two days before its expiry, to the council. A committee will print the charter for citizens before the election on adoption. The plan covers a four square mile city with ward divisions, listing elected officials including a mayor, treasurer, aldermen, justices, and constables, plus appointive clerks and auditors. The mayor would control the police department.

Rock crushes man during land clearing near Green Lake

Ole Jacobson died when a rock toppled during land clearing about two miles south of Spicer. He aimed to bury the rock below plow depth but it fell, crushing him instantly after five hours to recover the body. The report also notes real estate tax timing and upcoming Virginius opera at the Sanford Dodge venue.

Segerstrom and Miss Johnson Wed in Fahlun

The great event of the season in Fahlun last Wednesday united Mr. Fred W. Segerstrom of Willmar and Miss Mabel Lydia Annette Johnson, daughter of Elvis Johnson, in marriage at Elvis Johnson’s home with about two hundred guests. The ceremony was by Rev. A. Jarlson, with a wedding march by Grace Andrus, a wedding dinner, music, and a wedding trip to Chicago.

City commission for utilities and bonds rule

A three member city commission will oversee the electric and water plant with terms of one two and three years for initial appointments by the district judge and future appointments by incoming councils. A revolving fund of 85000 is created for improvements, replenished by assessments and not taxed thereafter. Bonded debt limit set at nine percent of assessed value. Poor fund levy limited to 14 mills, with possible property purchase up to 2400 for a poor house. A local option temperance clause is adopted.

Correction on East Norway Lake church padlock notice

The clipping from the Minneapolis Journal misstated that a padlock blocked preaching at East Norway Lake church. Prairie Fire Near Pennock Destroys Hay Stacks

Sparke from a Great Northern engine started a prairie fire west of Pennock last Monday afternoon. The blaze northward consumed seven hay stacks totaling about 60 tons owned by Charley Stjernlof of Mamre. The Great Northern railroad company is hoped liable for the loss as residents fought the blaze. Also a petition signed by ten citizens seeks vacating part of Pacific avenue near the J. S. Robbing Co property and will be acted on after a 30 day posting period.
