Collision in Yard Sparks Heavy Loss for Great Northern
A two-train wreck in the local railroad yards near the carpenter shop yesterday morning left two refrigerator cars and two box cars damaged beyond use. Engineer Elmer Pelton escaped through the cab window with injuries including a sprained ankle, while fireman Frank Pschorr was unhurt. An extra freight train backing from the east collided with the switch engine on track No 3, derailing several cars and triggering a second, more violent impact as a string of cars from track No 12 was struck. Pelton suffered a possible fracture. later exams show a bone injury in his foot. Fire crews cleared debris as crowds gathered to view the scene. News of the wreck followed by a bowling league update as local matches revived interest with plans for a Thanksgiving tournament featuring teams from nearby towns.
