Willmar Fire Destroys Westberg Block and Losses Hit Thousands

Fire raged through the Westberg block in Willmar destroying Sundquist confectionery and G. O. Gand’s gents’ furnishings. Total losses reach thousands with partial insurance claims and no coverage on some items. The blaze prompted hurried hoarding of merchandise as crews fought to save adjacent shops in a windy night blaze.

Death of Ole H Gustrud Sparked Spicer Community Shock

The well known grain buyer Ole H. Gustrud died suddenly Monday afternoon after showing illness the prior evening. Born in Eskoge Norway, he settled in Dovre then Spicer, where he ran the Peavy elevator for fourteen years. Survived by six children, two brothers, a sister, and several relatives, his funeral will be held at Long Lake Lutheran Cemetery with services at Spicer and Long Lake church. The community mourns a respected citizen.

Death of Philip McManus at Green Lake

Philip McManus died at 6 30 Sunday morning at the family home in Green Lake town from catarrh of the stomach. He was about forty. The funeral was held today from St Marys Catholic church in Willmar with Rev Malloy officiating and burial in the Catholic cemetery. He leaves four brothers John F McManus Watab Minnesota Ed McManus Lintonville James and Hugh McManus Green Lake three sisters Mrs Harrison Van Vorst of Irving Minnesota Mrs M P Moran of Graceville and Miss Anns McManus of Green Lake.

Restated Arrest In Train Fare Case

Abobo gave name as Johu Brown and was ejected from the eastbound train for refusing to pay fare. Officers pulled him to a villa lockup after a disturbance. He offered to return and pay, then bit the officer during flight but was recaptured and jailed. He pleaded guilty to resisting an officer and fined ten dollars plus costs for seven days.

N Hendrickson sold his Spicer farm to DeCamp and others for 6000. A baby girl blessed Mr and Mrs Alfred Olander that Tuesday. A baby boy arrived for Mr and Mrs Ole Johnson last Friday. Miss Hannah Hanson enjoyed a surprise at Will Monson home with friends, an evening of dancing and merriment.

Spicer reports Milton Courtright and Miss Maggie Campbell arriving from Bertha Minnesota last Thursday. Milton will work at the blacksmith trade with Willie Nelson. A tram cut off the end of his thumb while gathering cabbage heads. Mrs P Downs rode the train to Willmar last Saturday. Rev and Mrs Findley departed for Duluth today. Chas Vettling from Kerkhoven moved into the Wi Olson residence and plans to build on his lot north of Spicer known as the Dodd property. A church Synod ladies benefit supper at Bonde hall next Tuesday at 6 pm. Tickets 25 cents with a short program and Will mast band. Menu includes scalloped oysters, Bosna thickened pie, meatballs, potato salad, teas, pickles, cake and doughnuts. White bread rye bread coffee and cream.

Swedish Lutheran services and mission meeting announced

Rev. A. Lindholm of Tripolis to conduct services at the Swedish Lutheran church next Sunday evening. He will preach at Mamre in the morning. A mission meeting with Pacific district ministers present starts at Mamre Monday morning, continuing at Willmar. The ametlage at Willmar will probably be Tuesday evening.
