Soldier Bright credited with most days in actual fighting

Kandiyohi County soldier Sergeant James Bright, son of Mrs. Olot Swenson of Atwater, served three years in Battery D of the Rainbow division. He spent 18 months overseas with many major engagements including Champagne and Verdun, and three months with the army of occupation in Germany. He was not wounded and one of only 65 of 209 men to return from his battery. Also on furlough is Pvt Elmer Jorgenson of Norway Lake, stationed at Fort Snelling, who has 11 months overseas with the 4th Division and arrives home for a 10 day leave.

Willmar High School plans commencement for Friday June 13 with Phyllis Haley valedictorian and Luella Grangaard salutatorian. Memorial Day Closing Requested by City Officials

Memorial Day observances will be held in Willmar on May 30 under the Commercial Club. Businesses should close as far as practicable for events honoring Civil War Spanish-American and World War veterans. Mayor E C Wellin and Commercial Club President T O Gilbert urge city offices to remain closed that day.

Willmar Chautauqua Season Tickets Sell to Support Soldier Boys

A Willmar notice explains the 21 to 27 June Chautauqua will be held in a central tent site two blocks south of the Post Office. The Midland Circuit provides the program, with season tickets at 2.25, sales by the local soldiers club to fund their rooms, and a 600-ticket bonus to boost support while the committee covers setup costs.

Return of No 4 train urged by Willmar towns

Willmar Commercial Club seeks the return of Great Northern No 4 over the Willmar division after its transfer to Fergus. Towns along the line argue for an evening schedule, especially Sundays. The Mor ris Commercial Club initiated the resolution. Also noted were plans for conventions in Willmar and Memorial Day arrangements.

Old Settlers Day Set for Willmar June 20 1919 Reunion

Kandiyoh County Old Settlers Association members met in Willmar to accept the Willmar Commercial Club invitation. The 1919 Reunion date was fixed for Friday June 20 with details to follow. The event is regarded as a major county occasion and Branton Forsberg Odell lead planning with the club. John Monson, a Willmar native, arrived in Boston after serving with the 32nd Field Signal Battalion, with prior service at Camp Dodge and Camp Pike, and action in the Argonne Forest. The city notes upcoming May church and club meetings with告 different local groups.

More buildings for state asylum at Willmar

The Willmar State Asylum now houses 186 patients with two large cottages in use. By next month 110 more patients are expected from other state hospitals and two new women’s cottages costing about 140000 will rise on the north side with 85 beds each. A service building 8500, an assembly hall for 400 to 500, and funding for a stock barn, general repairs, and a cow barn are planned. Contracts to let next month, work to begin in July.

Qvale Swenson Wedding in Willmar and Related Notices

The wedding of Swenson to Axel Wallmar Qvale of Willmar took place at the United Lutheran Church with a white satin gown, maid of honor Lydia Qvale, bridesmaid Olga Qvale, best man Walter Qvale, and usher George Swenson. A six o clock dinner followed at the bride’s home. the couple planned a honeymoon and future residence in Buffalo South Dakota. Also, Russel J. Quam of Pennock married Ella Marie Hatann of Willmar on May 14 1919 at the Lutheran Free church parsonage with a four course dinner at Merchants Hotel. the groom recently returned from overseas duty. The Bethel Lutheran church Ladies Society hosts a lunch Thursday afternoon. The Royal Neighbors Lodge holds the May party on May 2? with a 25 cent lodge member fee and a planned program and refreshments.

Notice for Red Cross workers parade dress uniform

Red Cross workers are asked to report in their surgical dressing uniform at Headquarters on May 20 at 10 30 a m to participate in the parade if weather is favorable. All Canteen Workers are also requested to come.

Willmar to honor soldiers with big parade in May 1919

Willmar will stage a town parade on Decoration Day to honor returned World War I veterans. Veterans must gather at the Court House at 10 AM for records and march formation, then parade to the County Fair Grounds by noon for a free soldiers dinner. The day includes bands, a chorus, and a guest speaker from Duluth.
