Willmar Auto Telephone Rates Cut City Debate Turns Legal

The Northwestern Telephone Exchange raises monthly rates by fifty cents effective June 1 1909 prompting citizen mass meeting at Carlson hall and a city council request to put the question to voters about municipal operation. Letters from the company explain losses and a planned cable expansion for better service while two party lines are highlighted as a feature for residences.

Willmar Telephone Rates Spark Committee Defense

In Willmar Minnesota letters press a committee from the Commercial Club repudiate claims by the Northwest Telephone Exchange Co. about company finances and authority to raise rates. The statement cites A E Rice L C Thorpe C W Odell Einer Wellin and T O Gilbert who examined the books last spring and are said to know the company’s condition. Continued on last page.

Willmar Wins First Home Baseball Game

A crowd packed the Willmar ball park as Willmar beat Benson 3 to 2 in a pitchers duel. Esch fanned 12 but allowed four hits while Hengstler scattered Willmar’s hits. After a first inning burst by Willmar, both sides scored once more. Umpire Ludvig Glarum kept decisions clean. The junior class hosted visiting players at Carlson hall after the game, prior to train departure.

Serious accident at Browns Valley injures Lawler family

Mrs Margaret Lawler suffered a broken collar bone and multiple injuries in a runaway at Browns Valley last Friday. John Quinn Frank Fuller and Mrs Rodenbur and the driver were badly hurt. Quinn and the driver were brought through town with severe cuts and possible internal injuries. Fuller sustained the worst head injuries and was heavily bandaged. Lawler may be home in about a week. The crash occurred after a tug broke on a steep hill as they returned from burying M Quinn. The buggy overturned several times before reaching the bottom.

Svea School Commencement and Memorial Notes

Last Monday night at Svea school District 55 three young women Olga Elvira Haroldson Lottie Bertina Nelson and Ingeborg Olita Nelson graduated. principal Elias Rachie spoke and diplomas were given by Supt. Fredrickson. Also covered are an automobile accident near the roundhouse with few injuries, theater plans for The Rivals at the opera house, a farewell for Rev. J J Malloy, a humorous piece about a "Circus that Never Came" and community notices including a memorial service for Rev A G Hall and local social events.

Elmhurst High School Class of 1909 Graduation Headline

The 1909 graduating class at Elmhurst High School will equal the 1907 class in size, with twelve girls and twelve boys. Fifth installment Early Explorers puzzle prize details

The Tribune announces the fifth installment in the Early Explorers puzzle series with six cash prizes totaling $2.31 and four 50 cent prizes. Obituary of Mrs. John M. Spicer of this city in La Jolla

Mrs. John M. Spicer died in La Jolla California from heart trouble after a period of illness. Services will be at 2:30 PM at the residence with interment at Green Lake family burial ground. Eliza Frances Deming Spicer was born October 24 1851 in Middleburg Vermont. She moved to Belle Plaine Minnesota in 1865 and married John M. Spicer December 23 1868. The couple moved to this city in 1871 and remained residents. Her husband is ill in Denver and unable to attend. She leaves five daughters Agnes Frances Greulich Amy Maude Wallace and Jessie Irene Edna Ruth Eunice Martha. Mason W Denver. Russell P and Raymond Deming Willmar. one sister M J Maynard Atwater. one brother George C Deming St Paul. She was active in St Luke's Episcopal church groups and will be mourned by many in the community.

Richard D Haley dies after stroke at Grassy Lake

Richard Douglas Haley, son of Mrs Mary Haley of this city, died at Grassy Lake Alberta Canada last Saturday after a paralysis stroke suffered on April 21. Immediate family attended. Funeral from the Catholic church with Rev Cleary of Minneapolis and several other priests, burial in Catholic cemetery. Haley born July 1874 on family homestead, lived here until 21 then in Minneapolis with American Express, later Michigan North Dakota merchant. He moved to Grassy Lake March 1 to run general merchandise lumber and hardware before his death.

Boy Poisoned by Chewing Roots near Raymond

Clarence Orville Peterson, age nine, son of Oscar J. Peterson, died Wednesday evening after eating water hemlock roots near the family farm east of Raymond. He grew ill en route to the house and died shortly after, despite medical efforts. The tragedy marks an uncommon local death from the plant, which grows along streams and wetlands.
