Willmar Area Social Notes Highlight Numerous Visiting Friends

A parade of locals and visitors fills Willmar and nearby towns with brief trips and familial gatherings. Halvor Shipstead visits St. Cloud while J J Hamnes and Miss Marie Grue travel via Willmar, Clara City, and the Twin Cities. Several residents plus relatives spend Sundays with kin in Kerkhoven and Sioux City, Iowa, or travel to Minneapolis and Lincoln Nebraska for visits and summer plans.

Eighteen Children In One Family Immigrant Tale

Immigrants passing through Willmar last Saturday included Russian Jews. One family, a father, mother, and nine children, with nine more left behind due to lack of funds, all appeared well and cheerful. The mother said those at home were equally healthy. They head toward Ellendale, North Carolina, near a new Russian German settlement.

Willmar Commercial Club Holds May Meeting Amid Local Improvements

At the May 3 gathering of the Willmar Commercial Club Reverend D B Spencer was made an honorary member. Thorpe reported progress on Ze nith Fuel Saver and Smoke Abater Co locating at least site in Barnstad addn with a spur track and office. A $500 club subscription was requested to help buy the site, with lists to be circulated. Tallman praised the Good Roads rally and urged a council interview for road improvements and maintenance. Cross streets need more attention in some districts, while streets are kept dr agged. A three member committee including the president was formed to meet the council. Rains announced five cash prizes for best kept lawns and premises, continuing last year’s plan. The Publicity Committee backed a safe Fourth of July celebration at Homewood Park and was authorized to organize it.

Local Residents Featured In Weekend Activities

Lawrence Peterson Otto Christofferson and Albert Sanvik were callers near Kandiyohi last Sunday. Charlie Sands, the college banker, spent Sunday at Eagle Lake. Carl Gunvalson returns home near Cyrus Monday after finishing a commercial course. graduates in June. Gena As Jackson of Pope county attended the Junior-Senior reception at Seminary hall and plans graduation in June. The base ball team eyes Granite Falls next Saturday at Athletic Park as fans are urged to attend. The Junior Senior reception featured games, orchestra, a class prophecy by Miss Lillian Boyd, and a short address by Rev. Waaler. refreshments closed the evening with William Bergstrom as MC.

Pike Fry for Green Lake

Twenty eight cans of pike fry passed through here last Friday destined for Green Lake. Each can held upwards of half a million fry, promising excellent fishing if conditions allow maturation. The fry were secured from the State Game and Fish Commission through D N Tallman.

China awakening inspires Mission lecture report

Rev. A J Qualen told a Tribune representative that China is waking up after centuries of sleep. He cited rapid educational changes and a rising hunger for modern learning, noting Japan's example spurring reform. He said Western influence and missionary work gain new openings as China studies European civilization. He has 23 years of China service and tours to raise support before returning after a Northwest lecture tour.

Obituary: Mrs. Elsie Lindstrom Dies at 72 in New London

Elsie Ekstrom Lindstrom a Swedish born widow aged 72 years 1 month 18 days died Thursday afternoon at New London after a year of illness. Born March 17 1838 in Sweden her early life remains largely unknown. She survived by descendants but five children with her first husband Nelson died in infancy. She escaped the Chicago fire and became a nurse before marrying James J Lindstrom in 1880 at Kankakee. The couple lived in Crystal Lake Illinois until his death in 1887 and she moved to New London the following year. The obituary note continues on the last page.

Memorial Fund for Norway Fund for Norwegian Memorial

Norwe gian-Americans plan a memorial for Norway on its 100th constitution anniversary in 1914. A million crowns, about 270000 dollars, is expected to be raised, with 70000 dollars earmarked to restore the Ikro nd hjem cathedral. An executive committee of nineteen led by Senator L C Thorpe will organize county by county drives across states, with 11 solicitors named in the local area and early cash contributions noted.

County votes $10,000 for roads and bridges

Willmar’s county commissioners approved 18 resolutions totaling about $10,000 for road and bridge work, funded by a higher road tax levy with no overall tax rise. Funds cover State Roads 1 and 2, steel bridges on Roads 3 and in Holland, a bridge in Edwards, drag work, and nine public drags donated by citizens. Phil Haley named superintendent to oversee state road projects with two crews soon to work.

Keep Highways Clean Near City Approaches

Complaints reach office about dumping garbage along the southern road into the city. Authorities are improving city approaches and urge removal of waste to prevent spoiling the work and condition of the roads.

High School Activities Include Plays Concerts and Recitations

Seniors spend week practicing their play as seniors receive report cards. Hazel Lien visited school last week. Violin and vocal program by Helen Sather and Cyrus Borgstrom pleased students. English class recites daily. Minnie Berg and William Thunstedt gave notable recitations. Musical Georgettes to perform two concerts at the High School auditorium next Saturday to raise funds for the athletic association deficit. Admission 10 and 25 cents. Georgettes Musical Delights York Audience

The Georgettes presented classical and popular pieces using fifteen instruments to a critical York audience. Attendees called the performance one of the best ever, with expectations of a packed house if they return. The event showcased notable musical skill and left the crowd eager for another appearance.

Alumni Banquet Set By Willmar High School Alumni

The Willmar High School Alumni Association announced its annual meeting and banquet for Tuesday evening June seventh at Carlson hall. Over 200 graduates are notified and a large turnout is expected. A fine program of toasts and music is planned. Graduates unable to attend are asked to send letters read at the banquet.
