Dozens of short notes list residents and guests in Willmar and nearby towns. People visited relatives in Wisconsin and Minnesota, attended events in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and traveled to Atwater, Litchfield, Spicer, Hutchinson, and Wahpeton. Several drove to big cities for work or study, with others hosting guests at home and cottages.
Next Sunday schedules in Colfax New London Willmar and area include Swedish Mission Presbyterian Church of Christ Scientist First Methodist and Free Lutheran listings. Activities feature morning and afternoon services, Sunday School, Y P S C E, Epworth League, Lenten events, confirmations and meetings with local societies and guest speakers.
The city council passed the telephone ordinance last Monday by five votes to three. Aldermen Anderson, Kent and Johnson voted no, while Fredrickson Erickson Sperry Freeberg and Dahlheim supported it. The mayor signed the measure and it is published in this issue. The meeting also featured a debate over the Bowe investigation and a crowded program at the High School concert.
Madison defeated Ada 29 to 20 to clinch the state basketball title at Willmar High School gym. Olson of Ada fell early, Madison led 17 8 at halftime, Ada tied 12 12 in the second half, and Madison's 30 supporters celebrated. Coaches and players named include Ray Little, Roy Little, Grant Jacobson, Leonard Jacobson, Paul Dahl, Oscar Berg, Alfred Thompson, Fred Robinson, mascot Arthur Houck, and Prof L W Feik. Attendance included Prof F W Dobbyn and several Madison supporters. Ada’s Prof A M Mueller coached.
Mrs. Mower of Huron entertained Mrs. Quale a few days last week. Hub hotel sold to G A Erickson. Anders Rydin buys a Willmar house and moves here. Marcus Pinney hosts a 12th birthday dinner. Helen Martin of Harrison dies of pneumonia. Carleton College Glee Club tours the Northwest. St Agnes Guild brings Kathleen Hart and Mary Allen to Opera House. Rev Lacey conducts funeral services for a child. Judge Quale appoints D F McDermott to view assessments on Foot Lake. Holm cottage moved for new residence. Editor C Berghuis visits Willmar. E P Blomberg to Marshall, then Willmar. Gena Berg to study music in Minneapolis. Rev C A Hultkrans to visit Mamne and Willmar. P C Williams ships furniture to St Paul. Palm’s Ideal Bakery changes hands to Schmidt and Kasten. Olson block skylight completed for Eaklund gallery. Kalnes visits from Starbuck Times. Bethel Church to rebuild concrete steps. The mass meeting last Thursday elected E. C G Wellin mayor by acclamation after nomination by Russell Spicer with Judge Gilbert seconding. Hans Gunderson won city clerk by 184 to 116. G C Haines acclaimed assessor and C W Odell treasurer. Ward races selected Johnson, Hedin, Sperry, Norman, and Freeberg as aldermen. no license contest.
Ringville March notes describe sickness causing Ida Quinberg to quit Minneapolis business college and return home. Local events include school services, car and buggy purchases, visits from out of town residents, hospitalizations, a spring sale at Georgeville store, and a basket social with proceeds for schoolhouse improvements.
A series of social gatherings is reported including teas, luncheons, and hostesses hosting friends. Miss Ruth Spicer and Miss Mary Allen travel plans appear, along with lectures and church activities. Several residents, including Edith Thorpe and Clara Petersen, plan trips west. and local members attend dinners, parties, and club meetings with guests from Madison, Amery, and Minneapolis.
