Garments for War Refugees Appeal Leads Red Cross Drive

Mrs. Arthur Halvorson is named chairman for a city wide Red Cross garment drive to collect used clothing for destitute war refugees. Residents asked to bring items to the Wisconsin building next week for packing and shipment.

Willmar School Building Requires New Bond Issue

To finance a projected new school building in Willmar a $40 000 bond issue is needed as the lowest bids exceed available funds. The board awarded contracts contingent on district bond approval, with a special election planned at the earliest date. Bids from several firms were presented for general construction heating and ventilation electrical work and related systems, with architects to tabulate alternates before final awards to Madsen Construction Co Ben Benson Sterling Electric Co and others. The project, deemed vital to city schools, aims to begin promptly once bond approval is secured.

Many Residents Not Citizens in County Registration

The county registers 912 aliens with Norwegians leading at 363, Swedes 275, and Dutch 85 among others. Precinct by precinct tallies show Willmar city at 764 aliens aged 14 and older, with 90 under 14. Fire gutts NY storehouse during heavy snowstorm

A Great North storehouse office was destroyed by fire during a snowstorm early Saturday. Crossed electric wires caused a short circuit triggering the blaze. Firefighters faced access issues due to a tall fence, delaying water supply from a nearby hydrant. Damage, about 29000 dollars, wiped out employee records, stock records, and a large portion of stock.

Salvage Week For Red Cross Collects Junk

Obituary notices from Eagle Lake and Minneapolis deaths

Obituary notices report Henry Simonson of Bethesda Homes Eagle Lake died March 7 from heart trouble. Born January 11 1902 in Throndjem Norway he immigrated to America at five, lived in Minneapolis briefly, then at the Bethesda Homes since 1908. Funeral held March 22 in Eagle Lake church. Also noted Swan Walgren longtime Town of Fahlun resident died suddenly in Minneapolis March 9 aged 83. Other notices include Mrs Herman Gerdes of near Raymond dying in Willmar hospital and storms creating travel hazards.

Chickens Bring 54.25 for Red Cross at Alm’s Sale

Kandiyohi Red Cross benefit at Andrew Jim sale drew spirited bids. Two chickens donated by Alm sold to Daugharty then Lawler for 16.60, a Lawler rooster sold and resold 21 times to reach 37.75. Auctioneer W J Davin and Hal Campbell led the bidding with several buyers, yielding a handsome total for the Red Cross.

Red Cross Remembered At Kandiyohi Sale

At the G I Nelson sale leftover food from a free lunch was auctioned for Red Cross and W C T U, split evenly. Future auctions during wartime are expected to raise funds for the Red Cross, as shown by the Alme sale in Kandiyohi yesterday and Edman Bros hog sale planned for March 25 at the fairgrounds with a top purebred gift for Red Cross.

Willmar Lyceum: Dr Burton Speaks On Lemons Of 1917

Willmar welcomed Dr Marion L Burton president of the University during a Willmar Lyceum lecture at the opera house. His talk on lemons of 1917 drew a small audience despite a masterful address. An agricultural meeting follows on March 23 in School District No 45 with the high school program and several appears.
