Local and Personal News Highlights From Willmar

The Willmar area records a lively week with the railroad eating house opening and a string of visits and departures. Death of Ole Testad at Parson's addition

Ole Testad died last Saturday afternoon at the home of Philip Kuntz in Parson's addition after a long illness of chronic consumption. He was about 43. The disease left him bedbound for 15 months. His mother and sister cared for him. The funeral was held yesterday at 10:30 with Rev. Anderson officiating at the Synod church, followed by interment in the Synod church cemetery.

Great Northern Flyer Ditches Near Smith Lake

The Great Northern Flyer ditched near Smith Lake Saturday evening at about eight o'clock while running at forty miles an hour. The entire train except the engine left the track but no passengers were injured due to level ground and intact coaches. Willmar passengers aboard included Mr. and Mrs. Alton Crosby F J Stansberry K Samuelson and Theodore Linn. A special train from Minneapolis evacuated passengers around seven Sunday morning and again at nine o'clock.

Debate Plans Change for High School Excursion

The Minneapolis trip was canceled due to a plan shift for delisting teams. Breckenridge and Albert Leas would clash, so Willmar will face Breckenridge while Minneapolis eyes Willmar. Next debate date is unclear, possibly March 10 or March 17, to be held locally. Breckenridge’s three-member team includes two young ladies, and local boys must hustle to win.

Elks Lodge Formed Here With Elk Parade and Banquet

Local Elk members organize a lodge in Willmar on Thursday March 23 led by W W Koons. A special St Paul to Willmar train flexes through St Cloud with delegations from Austin Redwing St Paul Mankato Duluth and Brainerd. More than 100 members already, 300 visitors expected, parade at 2 pm, banquet at Bonde hall, St Cloud lodge handles festivities and bands. Notables include Henry L. Osseo Literary Society Hosts Success in Reception

The Osseo reception drew about 60 attendees including eight members and guests. Held in a blue and white hall, the event featured a grand march by the navy band, old favorite songs, a social period in the boarding hall, and ample refreshments. The Osseo Society, reformed by Seminary students, aims to promote good literature and public speaking with more than 40 members this year and active engagement from many students.

Death of Mrs Karin Lennon Larson at New London

The community mourns Mrs Karin Lennon Larson wife of Louis Larson of New London who died Friday at 7 a m after years of paralysis. Born Aug 15 1840 in Ensinger Hillaingland Sweden she emigrated with family in 1853. She married Louis Larson Jan 19 1869 and leaves husband two daughters Mary and Carrie, plus a brother John Olson. Funeral held at Lebanon church with English Swedish services and large attendance, burial in Lebanon cemetery.

Annual Meet of Central Minnesota Luther College Club

The Central Minnesota Luther College Club held its annual meeting at the Seminary ball with large attendance. Officers elected were H. S. Hilleboe president D C Jordahl vice president Magnus Peterson secretary and Jon Fi Estrem treasurer. A supper followed and the club outlined its mission to aid desiring students toward education at Luther College Decorah Iowa with loans repayable when possible and ministry aims for Norwegian Synod. Proceeds and Dorcas Guild efforts added to the treasury, with cheers for the successful program and a humorous dialogue The Train to Mauro.

City Fathers Meet Discuss Budget and Elections

City council approved seventeen bills totaling 414.85. Fire department salaries set at 50 dollars for the chief and 25 for the assistant. Election judges named for April 4 in each ward. Polling places designated in Seminary hall, Lawry block, Park Hotel, and Freeberg’s carpenter shop. Mayor to summon charter commission to consider amendments before term ends.

Albert Beery Anderson born March 30 1873 died suddenly February 23 at a hospital in Los Animas California. Family burial in Hawick with mourners including Mrs N P Nelson Alfred Anderson Oscar Anderson and Miss Mary Walberg. The bereaved family receive community sympathy.

Change at Marble Works Becomes Shipstead & Johnson Bros

Last Friday the Willmar Marble Works owned by Halvor Shipstead became a co partnership with Paul and Kent Joho son of Montevideo. The Joho brothers bring 14 years of Montevideo Marble Works experience. Shipstead will continue the monument business in Willmar and the new firm will operate as Shipstead and Johnson Bros. They plan to reside in the First ward and pursue a growing demand for marble products.

Miller Case Receives Stay After January Court Term

The Minnesota vs Miller case, Miller granted a stay of sentence at January term before Judge Quale. Miller was fined 100 plus costs totaling 237 48, appeal notice and bond filed by attorney Porter. Also noted is an exhibit auto at Willmar Hardware, praising puncture proof tires and a mystery constructor. Jobo Skoolheim plans a 21800 residence south of the L F Smith home in Lakeside. A baron under construction and many new houses planned this season in Willmar.
