A Bowery dance event is set for Saturday evening June 12 at Elmer Andersons two miles southwest of Willmar. Local residents and visitors are invited to enjoy an evening of music and dancing in a rural venue hosted by Elmer Anderson.
A silver medal contest under W. C. T. U. auspices will be held Friday evening June 11 at eight o'clock in the First Presbyterian church Willmar. The program includes orations, vocal solos, piano selections and a presentation of medal with admission one cent.
Hjalmar Peterson and Company staged a benefit at the Opera House Friday under the Willmar Fire Department, drawing a packed crowd and netting the fire fighters 301 after expenses. The troupe featured Olle i Skratthult, costumed dances, Nor een and Granlund on accordion, Madame Olga Lindgren Peterson and Otto Benson, with Ole providing humor. Petersons travel widely in the United States, home base Willmar, and a stake in The Magnet Inn run by his brother David. Augustson Graduates From Gustavus Adolphus College. joins Tribune Staff as assistant editor after four years and prior experience as Breezes editor in chief.
Miss Tda Halvorson becomes Willmar’s first lady to ride an aeroplane, with Harlan Preble aboard this afternoon reaching 4500 feet before the craft vanished into a cloud. The Paulson machine plans to visit Alexandria tomorrow then Atwater Sunday, likely returning to Willmar later. the Halvorson family hosts the owner and driver, once neighbors in Iowa. Fitzgerald O'Brien reports the marriage of Miss Anna Fitzgerald to Mr. George L. O'Brien at St Mary’s church, Willmar, with details of attire and attendants. the couple will reside in Washington DC after a wedding breakfast at Mrs. Ahistrom’s and a train trip to the Cities and southern Minnesota. The bride taught in Willmar last year. they are former residents of Blooming Prairie. Mr. and Mrs. Miner Hildahl with children from Estevan, Canada, arrived for summer in Willmar. Mr. Hildahl is recovering from a severe illness. Cyoil Swenson arrived from Menomonee, Wisconsin, for Stout Institute events.
A large all day picnic is planned at the Christenson place near Nor way Lake fourteen miles north of Willmar. Speakers include Henrik Shipstead and A C Townley. Capt Mallon may attend. Attendees are asked to bring lunch baskets. the event features local speakers and a filled program.
A. B. Gilbert critiques Minnesota Fair Tax association advertising against tonnage tax. He disputes claims about steel trust ore ownership and reserves, notes 1919 figures show 58 Minnesota mines producing over half the state’s ore, and argues tonnage tax targets net earnings, not mining activity. He refutes assertions about Cuyuna range decline and outlines ore washing costs and tax implications.
The article notes that crude ore yields 60 pounds of concentrate and sells at lake ports in 1919 with an average profit of 2.15 dollars per ton. G. H. Southwick of Britt Iowa and Sr H Paulson owner en route to Fargo landed at Willmar last Saturday after a broken strut delayed repairs. The pilot has offered overhead tours for ten dollars each, carrying twenty four passengers so far. The Canadian Curtis aircraft cost four thousand five hundred dollars a year ago. The plane will proceed to Fargo on Thursday and is based at Bonham's western Willmar residence.
South end residents filed a petition protesting the evening street sprinkling contract awarded by the former council citing extra expense. The council will hear the petition next Monday evening. Meanwhile other city sections favor sprinkling and may seek service this year if they pay. Mr. and Mrs. A C Anderson and family visited Benson friends, joined by Miss Josephine Knutson of La Crosse, Wis.
A reception in honor of Rev and Mrs Nordahl Thorpe, recently married in Portland, Ore., was hosted by Rev Thorpe's parents Mr and Mrs M O Thorpe. About fifty guests attended as the Bothen orchestra played, and Rev Vaaleri spoke on behalf of the guests. The couple, now on their wedding trip, received many gifts and plan to attend the Minneapolis church conference this week.
Marriage licenses issued for James Nieuwenhius to Bertha Roelots on June 8 and Louis Anderson of Yellow Medicine county to Flossie Elizabeth Smithson on June 9.
Captain George H. Mallon, candidate for lieutenant governor, denounces painters who stayed home to smear yellow on houses while soldiers fought in No Man's Land. He declares support for anti militarist laws to curb profits from war and questions profiteers who gained while veterans received low pay.
A. C. Townley, president of the Farmers' Nonpartisan League, and Mr. Cook will speak in Swenson's grove on the northeast shore of Lake Lillian on Tuesday June 1st. They will arrive by aeroplane though time is unknown. A new flag pole for the courthouse grounds is in place to display Old Glory during events.
The demolition of the Spicer buildings at Fifth St and Litchfield Ave proceeds to clear space for a First National Bank branch. Victor Johnson relocated his news stand to the Central Hotel, sharing space with the Great Northern Express Company, and added a mobile outside stand with cigars and other goods.
