Personal visits fill Willmar area over Decoration Day

Mrs. J. H. Erickson and many neighbors traveled to Minneapolis for visits with relatives while others stayed local. Comments note Misses Amanda Larson, Jennie Erickson and Miss Esther Johnson attending school events. several guests arrive from Kandiyohi, Harrison, Paynesville, and Eagle Lake to visit family in Willmar and nearby towns.

Memorial Day Observance in Willmar Parade and Services

Memorial Day observances in Willmar featured a large parade from the City Library to Park Assembly grounds, with city officials, the fire department, the Commercial Club, and hundreds of students carrying flags, followed by an auditorium program including Gorham Powers and Senator Thorpe. The day also included church notices, missionary meetings, and school play performances by the high school seniors.

Willmar High School graduation slated for next Friday

The twenty eighth annual commencement at Willmar High School will be held next Friday evening June 3 at the opera house. The program includes invocations, orations, debates, music by the High School Chorus, class prophecy and diplomas presented by Board President Russell Spicer, with benediction to close.

Reception for New Pastor at Leba Non Lutheran Church

The Leba non Lutheran church at New London held a surprise reception Friday evening for Rev. Christian Swenson and his family. Rev. G. Peterson spoke for the district, presenting a purse of about $90 from local and Spicer congregations. Rev. C. E. Nordbreg offered remarks as part of the cordial welcome and social hour followed with refreshments on the lawn.

Train time error prompts early departure on Mid Sett er’s Day

A misprint set the New London special train by one hour. The Atwater departure is 7 30 am instead of 18 30 as advertised. All other points unchanged. Also a graduation gift sale at Elmquiat’s jewelry on Benson Ave near the post office.

Baseball season closes with dramatic Willmar win and 5 7 records

The local schools cap their season with a Langford field showdown. Willmar defeats Benson High 7 to 6 after a late rally, led by Kiland and Hengstler on the mound and Grangaard, Anderson, Johnson, and Ives with key hits. Earlier, the Seminary routed Benson High 10 to 0, and Willmar edged Litchfield 4 to 3 with Chester Ives delivering the game winner. Both the High School and Seminary finish with 5 wins in 7 games. The Copper Company moves offices to the Post Office block.

Fire Destroys A G Lundberg Farm Machinery Shed

A fire on the A G Lundberg farm in New London destroyed a machine shed and most farm machinery and the corncrib contents. Grandchild likely started it with matches while the Lundbergs were away. Neighbors and village men assisted, saving the granary. insurance covered only part of the logs.

Industrial Building Bond Vote Approved By School Board

A special election called by the board of education last Saturday approved a $15,000 bond issue by 81 to 82. Funds will build and equip an agriculture manual training and domestic science building south of the high school with plans to start immediately and finish by December 21.

Herbert Feig to Leave Willmar for McGregor

Herbert Feig, two years teller at First National Bank in Willmar, resigns to become cashier at Tallman Investment in McGregor North Dakota. He will move soon. Melvin Johnson fills his Willmar teller role after leaving S. E. Stansberry Implement Company.

Conductor Hansen Injured in Doon Iowa Accident

Franklin V. Hansen, a conductor, is bedbound from injuries after an accident at Doon Iowa early last Wednesday. He toppled from the engine tender when a grab iron came off, injuring his back and right knee. He returned home Thursday morning. Doctors say his injuries are not severe and he should be able to be out again soon. This is his second accident in two years, the prior one keeping him off duty for nine months.

Runaway buggy scare ends calmly near Colfax

Mrs Anton Johnson two miles east of the city endured a runaway when a strap on the harness broke near Fourth street. The horse bolted about three blocks but she kept control with her three boys aboard. A busy week includes a Ladies Guild meeting on Friday June 3 at 4 pm and a M E church convention on June 2 and 3. August Lundgren, noted Colfax farmer, rented his farm for five years and plans easier days ahead.

Colfax resident J C Bergquist traveled to Willmar for business and leisure while Mies Birdie Ramsett hosted a house party with Normal School friends. Various local residents visited, moved, or announced births and relocations amid a flurry of small town social notes.
