Queen of Honor Contest Started in Willmar Area

The Queen of Honor pageant begins with about ten entrants led by Muriel Otterness, backed by the Kandiyohi County Bank, and Evangeline Nygaard, the railroad men’s candidate. Voters attach coupons to support favorites. first standings to be released Friday.

Repairs underway on State Highway 4 between Spicer and Willmar

Minnesota State Highway Department sets aside 10000 for reshaping pavement and removing rock from subgrade on Trunk Highway 4 from Spicer to Willmar. Work to start in about ten days, with crews moving from shoulders east of Willmar. Excavation begun for basement of new Catholic church, plans include a T shaped auditorium addition and bids to be received.

Labor convention attendees from local unions visit Crookston

Anton Peterson vice president of the district and Peter Bartleson a local delegate left the fore part of the week to attend the State Federation of Labor convention held this week in Crookston.

Willmar Post Office Plans Concrete Mailbox Posts

The Willmar post office has received a set of concrete posts to replace steel posts supporting mail boxes around the city. Bids have been received for the project.

Road Completed North of Atwater by Barret Crew

A fifteen man crew led by Mike Barret completed the half mile stretch north of Atwater last week. Grading work on the road was finished, marking a milestone for the local improvement project.

The public library will be closed all day on Wednesdays during July and August.

Man Bound Over To Grand Jury In Liquor Transportation Case

Carl Bjork faced Municipal Court before Judge George Muller for liquor transportation. He waived examination and was bound over to the Grand Jury. bond set at $200. Four Willmar Construction Co workers were arrested for disorderly conduct, paid fines and costs of $8.50 each. A Thursday arrest for drunkenness and disorderly conduct led to a two hour suspended sentence and banishment from the city.

Willmar boys to attend Minnesota State Fair as guests

Two Kandiyohi County youths Elmer Peterson and Raymond Westburg both of Willmar will join a Tenth Annual Farm Boys Camp at Machinery Hill during the Sept 2 to 9 Minnesota State Fair. They earned the trip by top club work in saw and litter, calf and pig projects. The State Fair covers all expenses and educational tours. Also noted are J H Olsen & Company winning bids for a bank at Annandale and a Grove City Swedish Lutheran church, each brick with stone trim and about $20,000 cost.

Injured Finger at McKusick Plant Injures Worker

Raymond Meyers of Witlmar injured the little finger on his right hand last Saturday evening July 8 at six oclock when caught between a car and a bucket on the big mixer at the McKusick plant near the city. The cut exposed bone and the finger was mangled. He did not work for several days after the accident.

Locomotive Firemen Picnic At Lake Florida

Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men No 95 held a picnic at Lake Florida last Sunday. A large crowd attended enjoying swimming fishing and other amusements with refreshments served. Everyone reports a splendid time.

Mrs John Selin Buried Friday in Swedish Methodist Church

The funeral for Mrs. John Selin of Willmar, born Christine Engstrom in Haltingland Sweden, died from kerosene explosion burns July 11. Services at Swedish Methodist Church featured Rev Claus Johnson and Rev Edgren. Interment at Fairview Cemetery drew about 36 autos, with many floral tributes. Survived by husband John Selin and children Edwin Ruby Olive and John Franklin. five children born, one Janette deceased. Mrs Selin was a Christian, beloved by many and a member of the WCTU.

Trouble at the Circus Ends With Sheriff Action

The Gollmar Bros Circus faced closure of three minor shows a gambling device a dancing act and a snake performance. A woman selling obscene pictures for 25 cents was arrested after a parley and fined ten dollars as officials closed the acts.

Windom Tourists Escape Lake Wagonga Car Crash

Five Windom residents narrowly escaped death when a Ford plunged over an embankment into Lake Wagonga. The party from Windom, returning from the south, failed to notice a west turn and the car rolled into the water. Two were seriously hurt, others lightly injured. Ella Gove, 15, scalded by radiator water, and sister Mary, 11, sprained wrist, received treatment at Willmar Hospital. Damaged car had a broken rear wheel and windshield.

Sentenced to Stillwater for breaking into store

DeLancey Charlott pleaded guilty in district court to grand larceny in the first degree for breaking into Elmer Orred's general merchandise store at Spicer on July 15. Judge G E Quale imposed an indefinite term of hard labor at the state penitentiary. Charlott was taken to Stillwater by Deputy Sheriff Ernest Olson.

Greatest battle of season Sunday at Belgrade field

The biggest baseball day of the year arrives next Sunday at 8 p.m. with Belgrade visiting. Last week's clash drew bright notes from twin city papers as Bert Gleason pitched well but lost in the 11th amid fumbles. The lineup stays similar, with Belgrade adding a Minneapolis man. Also listed are Osakis July 20, Alexandria August 6, Bird Island August 13 at the local grounds.

Fire Alarm Saved Grove City Buildings by Engineer Kemp

Engineer Geo Kemp on freight No 571 spotted a barn fire at Grove City and triggered the alarm as his train paused. Firefighters arrived quickly and saved surrounding buildings. The loss was about 300 dollars. Conductor Oscar Storm on No 471 is noted. Rayburn Larson and Reuben Sandin returned from Minneapolis trip last Wednesday.

District Convention Plans For Ortonville Event

The third annual American Legion District 7 convention and the second annual American Legion Auxiliary district meeting will be held in Ortonville on Monday July 24. Delegates from focal post include Henry G. Young Archie Carlson and others. auxiliary delegates listed. The program features registration sessions at Legion Club Rooms and M E church, a 9:30 a m opening, luncheon at Odd Fellows Hall, joint session at 2 30 at the Orpheum, with speakers Stafford King and Mrs Sandy Hamilton. A late afternoon picnic at Biz Stone Lake and a Babtonka Pavilion dance conclude the day for delegates and alternates. Alternate attendees and a full list to follow next week.

Counting the Cars At Major Highway Junction

Two men are assigned to count all vehicles at the trunk highway 4 and trunk highway 10 junction on several dates starting July 6 and continuing through August 30. Counting runs from 6 AM to midnight with a possible double 18 hour shift, including horse drawn vehicles, to determine traffic totals.

Three New Recruits Join Company E in Minnesota Infantry

The Fifth Minnesota Infantry adds Clarence Halvorson Russell Hegness and Orlean Christian to its Company E roster. The unit now has seven complete squads and a total of 61 corporals and privates eight sergeants two lieutenants and the captain. The company will camp August 12 at Lake City.

Andrew Larson and his daughter Mrs. D N Tallman returned from a trip to Bat tle Creek Michigan where Mrs Larson is staying at the sanitarium. She is reported greatly improved after the visit and is recovering well.

Accidental Discharge Injures Police Officer at Diamond Lake

Samuel Bonham, a Diamond Lake Pavilion special officer, narrowly escaped death when an 82 caliber revolver discharged after he and a friend cleaned it. The bullet pierced his upper right arm, passed through the thigh, and lodged near the knee. He was treated at Rest Hospital, with the bullet removed and progressing well.

Paving Delays As McKusick Crew Faces Gravel Shortage

The paving project progresses slowly with delays after July 6. Concrete resumed July 10 11 at 40 men and 15 workers now in the crew. Gravel from Hawick kept the pace, 400 feet daily on a 30 foot wide street. 24 Ford trucks idle, 5 large trucks from Atwater hired, 15 cars of gravel and sand daily, mixer functioning.

Henry Hartman sold the Watkins Medical business to Fred Julson last week and Julson assumed charge on Tuesday. Hartman and his wife Genevieve visited relatives in Carrington, N C, while Hartman plans to return to work as a brakeman for the Great Northern. Golden Rods Triumph Over Wildcats In Fourth of July

Golden Rods defeated the Wild Cats 7 to 4 on Sunday July 4. Batteries were Johnson Falkingham and Felton with Thorson and Bredeson. Walter Larson stopped briefly in Willmar en route to Graceville for a two week visit with his family. He has worked at the National Lamp Co in Cleveland since college graduation two years ago.

The Salvation Army Hall was sold last Saturday afternoon at a public sale. Bonham Bros bought it for 110 and it will be removed within ten days for a new building to be erected at once.

Pageant plans loom for Willmar American Legion show

Two directors oversee preparations for a county pageant to be staged August 1 and 2 at the Fair Grounds. The effort unites Willmar and Kandiyohi County groups in a grand production depicting early regional life with disaster and rescue narratives, featuring a large cast and professional dance directors from Chicago and Russia. Rehearsals start on the Courthouse lawn at 7 30 each evening with Indian episode groups meeting Friday the 21st.
