Boys Head to Camp Wadsworth from Kandiyant County

Kandiyant County recruits, about 100 boys, depart Friday July 26 for Camp Wadsworth South Carolina. They gather at the court, receive badges, and a group photo follows. Special trains carry recruits from Stevens Swift Meeker Kanabec Mille Lacs and Stearns to Chicago Louisville then on to Camp Wadsworth arriving July 28. Local board struggles to meet July quota amid harvest labor shortages and asks for quota reduction from officials.

Young Men Called for Special Training in Indianapolis

An Adjutant General order calls for Class 1 1918 registrants to go to Indianapolis for chauffeur training. Minnesota plans 300 recruits this fall with local boards accepting applications by July 22. Applicants need mechanical aptitude and at least a common school education. Local boards will select those most beneficial for service and future work.

Narrow Escape After Motorcycle Crash Near Eagle Lake

Paul Olson and Freddie Haulin escaped serious injuries Tuesday evening when their motorcycle hit the left fender of a Ford driven by Garwell lad just outside town. The bike toppled the riders onto a lawn. both suffered only scratches and bruises. The Ford, driven by Henry Albert Joungquist, carried several locals from North Dakota and Montana who will be inducted July 26 at the local board and shipped to Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina. Miss Sophie Brustad will depart August 1 for St Paul to study millinery at J Rothschild Millinery House.

Boys Enter U S Service Train at Dunwoody Institute

A group of boys including Harlow R Kerr Hijalmar Oscar Hoaglund Abert N Tommeraasen Ole Rangvald Olson Arnold Gustrud and Melvin Ogren left Monday afternoon to join the U S service. They will receive mechanical training at the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

Red Cross yarn notice and local updates

The Monday evening concert at Synod Church featured Martha Retus, a soprano from Red Wing, and accompanist Laura Forde. Net proceeds totaled 50 dollars for the Red Cross, with committee organizers from the Young People's Society.

Obituary for August Bjelkengren Pioneer of Whitefield

The obituary notes the death of August Bjelkengren aged 83 years 7 months 14 days, a Swedish immigrant and longtime Whitefield resident who joined Svea church in 1876. He is survived by his widow and nine children, nineteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. The funeral was held at Svea on July 16 with Rev. J. B. Sorenson officiating.
