English service at Seminary Hall Sunday. Miss Anna Iverson returns from the cities. Mrs. James Lambrechte returns to Minneapolis after a visit. Piggemier finishes with Willmar ball club and heads for Minneapolis. Various residents visit relatives and friends, travels, and farm work noted. Willmar plans a big harvest, new building, and several local notices.

Willmar to Erect Fireproof Furniture Store and Elevator

New commercial activity includes a fireproof two story 60 by 70 foot structure on Pacific avenue and Sixth street to be leased to Andrew Peterson for years, with asbestos covering and a large glass front. Contractor Andrew Bjorsell, occupancy expected by October first. Separate projects on Lundberg lots host I C Olson undertaker and Minnesota & Western Elevator Co plans to build an elevator on Great Northern right of way.

Early Morning Fire Hits Norlander Saloon Back Room

About one o clock last Thursday the Norlander saloon building rear end burned. A. G. Larson sleeping in a bedroom may have suffocated, but was rescued. Firemen extinguished the blaze before it spread. Cause believed lamp explosion. Property loss around two hundred dollars. no insurance.

Popular conductor W. H. Leopard to wed in Ontario

Announcement of the approaching marriage of W. H. Leopard a popular Sandstone Accommodation conductor, who will leave July 28 for Palmerston Ontario to wed Ella Kaerns and return to St Cloud as a family, with Leopard’s two young sons accompanying.

Tragic Train Fatality Sparks Inquest and Family Loss

C A Legard died after being struck by a 2 30 train last Friday morning. He was about 27, married with two children, and a bottle found on his person suggests intoxication. Coroner Zimbecke noted fatal injuries while a railway surgeon attended, and his widow and sister transported the body to Madison, D. for interment.

Major Belle Reynolds Needlework Valor Mentioned

Major Belle Reynolds, the sole woman commissioned for Civil War service at Shiloh, served with the Red Cross in the Spanish American War and later taught in schools. She gathered Philippine embroidery and drawn work, illustrating Estippine women’s needlecraft in The Delineator’s August issue for readers.

Flandreau Tops Willmar In Erratic Battle

Willmar and Flandreau played a tight game Wednesday with multiple errors by both sides. Markhus drove in four runs off a left field hit with bases loaded, but Flandreau pitchers kept him from similar success later. Final score 12 to 10 in favor of Flandreau. Also, a wedding in Willmar saw Miss Ansetasia Haley wed to Fred Hodgson with a large family and friends in attendance. The couple plans a post wedding tour and residence in Fergus Falls. Willmar later defeated St Cloud 10 to 5 at Athletic Park as Willmar’s hitting surged after a rough start. Various local notes, exchanges, and society items follow.

Willmar Beats Litchfield In Lively Parks Baseball Fight

A large Willmar crowd at Athletic Park witnessed Willmar defeat Litchfield 14 to 8. Willmar jumped to an early 8 run lead in the first inning, then held on as Litchfield rallied with four in the fourth and three in the eighth. Umpire C. W. Buck worked the game with Tredway, Bonde, Sullivan, Egan, Baerwald behind the plate and in the field. Willmar collected 11 hits off Tredway, 3 off Sullivan, 11 off Egan, while Litchfield had 3. Willmar’s Tredway and Larson homered, with multiple players tallying extra-base hits.

Dusty furrow and tar line curb chinch bug invasion

A Kansas State College circular advises farmers on chinch bug control. It rejects fungus spores as unreliable, promotes a dusty furrow trap with post holes for bug collection and kerosene emulsion for killing bugs, and suggests tar lines in wet weather as a fallback.
