The Willmar Farmers Elevator Company held its annual meeting on a Wednesday afternoon at the company offices on Pacific Avenue West. President N B Lienen presided as reports from officers showed the firm in reasonable condition and by laws were changed to a seven member board with Swan Nelson reelected and T C Sletten and A P Johnson added. The officer slate was reelected for another term. Also noted were the staff officers and their positions. Reverend and Mrs N J Aadland, returning from 12 years in China, passed through Willmar en route to Bengon for rest due to health. They conveyed greetings from Rev P T Konsterlie on the same China field.

Martin Sells Barber Shop to Graceville Man
M. J. Martin sold his barber business on Benson avenue to J. E. Pherigo of Graceville. The new owner took possession on June 24. Pherigo has over twenty years in the trade, thirteen years in Enderlin, N. D. The sale was due to Martin leaving the climate for his wife’s illness. Joseph Halldin returned from Minneapolis after over two months in a sanatorium and is greatly improved.

Pavement Laying Begins This Week in Willmar Streets
Willmar starts concrete paving this week with a large West End mixer ready on Litchfield Avenue. A twelve man crew will lay the 18 to 40 foot wide pavement, using about 90 tons of concrete per hour and 2000 square yards daily. Material arrives by carload from New London and Hawick as excavation and curbing continue.

Willmar to Meet Starbuck in Sunday Baseball Clash
The Willmar team hosts Starbuck next Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the local diamond. Starbuck is reputed to be one of the fastest teams in the region and has beaten Alexandria twice and swept Glenwood last week. Willmar hopes to capitalize on recent improved fielding and 32 hits over the last two games as they prepare for the tough Pope County opposition.

Difficulties in starting the travel washing plant at Long Lake delayed concrete paving on Willmar. The ten ton street roller is in place and curb work on Gorton Avenue up to 15th Street will finish soon. Grading to finish within two weeks, conduits and manholes for underground wires to be done by John McKugick as an addendum. Lightning Strikes Farm Home of Arthur Erickson
Lightning hit the Erickson farm near Willmar striking the house barn and milkhouse during a storm. Arthur Erickson escaped unharmed after nearing a water pail when the crash occurred. Glass shattered and a stove and milk house fixtures damaged though cattle were unaffected. Damages were reported not great and he expressed gratitude for the narrow escape.

Willmar Union Men Out On Strike
About 150 Willmar union workers including 87 carmen 25 boilermakers and helpers and 36 machinists and helpers walked out at ten o clock Saturday morning in a mass strike. The local shop voted nearly 100 percent for the walkout with only the foreman and two carmen remaining at work. Meetings are held daily at nine at the Odd Fellows Hall, and the strike committee is Sam Evans chairman John Ogren vice chairman and Albert Frogner secretary. Tomorrow the lineman and the telephone inspector are set to walk out.

County Road Work Underway Across the District
Contractors and county crews are grading and scraping multiple county highways. Projects include a 7 mile stretch between Kandiyohi and Atwater, a 4.5 mile segment east from New London, a 12 mile area near Sunburg, and a 5 mile Sunbury to Pope county line road. 50 000 Bottles At Fourth Of July Picnic Grounds

Kandiyohi County Telephone Rates Raised July First
The Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse Commission approved Kandiyohi County Telephone Company rate increases effective July 1 for local and rural calls, service connections, and extensions. New charges include monthly line rents, rural multiparty rates, schoolhouse rates, and per message tolls among Olson Willmar Atwater areas, with commission notes on long distance pricing and a modified, fair schedule to cover operating costs and depreciation.

The Kandiyohi County common schools will hold graduation in Willmar’s new high school on Tuesday July 11 at 2 30 PM. A large class is expected with many earning double credits by passing both county and state exams. A record total of 150 state credits were earned this year across the county.
