County populists convened in Willmar to elect delegates to the state convention. The gathering emphasized independent action, education on regulation of large combines, and nonpartisan reform. Delegates and alternates were chosen, with remarks stressing continued party vigor and fidelity to populist principles.
The Republican state convention nominated S. R. Van Sant for Governor and renominated him by acclamation. Other ticket picks include Ray W. Jones for Lieutenant Governor, P. Haneon for Secretary of State, J. H. Block for Treasurer, W. B. Douglas for Attorney General, Q. A. Pigeon for Clerk of the Supreme Court, and C. F. Staples for Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner. The platform avoids firm Cuban stance and reaffirms the Philadelphia platform.
A district court verdict favored the defendant in a breach of promise suit filed by Henry L. von Schenck of Groen Lele against Amanda Hoglund of Dovre. The unusual case drew a filled courtroom as witnesses testified about a broken engagement and alleged damages including lost wages and home comforts. The trial, which lasted about a day and a half, featured discussions of engagement anecdotes and a postponed wedding tied to the Hoglund estate settlement.
The new Bishop Samuel Cook Edgall visited St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Willmar, Minnesota. Rev J P McCullough was instituted as rector, with confirmation for James Torkelson Annie W Torkelson Minnie Wilson Mary Paulson and Lena Louise Pritchard. The bishop preached both morning and evening sermons. A local ball team was named to play Morris at Benson on July 4 led by Alfred Morkhus Norman Booth George Tyler Betton Branston Archie Larson Letterbak Peter Bonde Robert Otterness Chan Nelson, with Mr Smaby possibly joining. Mr and Mrs Henry Julen of Braham Minnesota visited Willmar this week. they are on their wedding trip. Mrs Julen is sister of Mrs A G Hedin and was formerly Esther Olson. The wedding occurred July 21.
July 1 notes report Jack Frost visits with light leaf damage. Local visits include C. C. Selvig of Willmar and Oscar Lundberg from the twin cities. Socials and games mark the week with a 7 to 9 Central Whitefield win and an ice cream social. Community members travel, move, visit relatives, and plan Fourth of July events across Willmar, Lake Elizabeth, Pennock, and Mamre with various church meetings and conventions noted.
Archandar reports Mr and Mrs John Norman of Swift county visited relatives over Sunday. Emma Soli and Julia Jacobson visited G J Yetterbee’s last week. John Pederson builds wind and saw mills on his farm. Ole Henum returns from North Dakota. Mary Lien suned at A O Henum’s. Rudolph Fjeletad of Northfield sold stereoscopes. Ole Soli worked on a claim at Bisseton and returned Thursday. Martin Siealrud and Anna Mark wed in a ceremony officiated by Rev D C Jordahl. S Nelson completed a term of school in Dist 54. praised as a top teacher. Farmers uneasy due to dry weather.
Ringville reports prolonged drought fears with potential crop loss if rain does not come. Residents Martin Amundson Emil Olson Sven Rustad and families traveled to North Dakota seeking homes. Miss Hanna Coyne returned from teaching in the western state. Local figures group to Duluth for Old Settlers excursion. Erickson Dairymen event earned praise as Prof. Strom urged farm stays, milk care talk by I B White and milking guidance by Prof. Haecker. Belgrade beat Ringville 12 to 9 in a baseball game, followed by ice cream social at Sonstegard’s for the team and visiting crowds. Ming Larnon of St. Cloud visiting Julia Sonstegard.
June 30 report from Whitefield notes a large turnout at the Baptist Little Helpers picnic hosted by Mr Hocan’s son. Oscar Lundberg returned home. Emma Johnson of Willmar spent several days here. J C Forsberg of Willmar photographed local houses. Mit Tillie and Mary Monson went to Cadwell South Dakota to visit Albert and Andrew Monson. Frank Rose of Willmar sought cattle. Edwin Erickson family and Adia Erickson stayed with A P Johnson. A party from Iowa and another from Raymond looked at farm properties, both intending to buy if suitable. O T Olson from Spicer visited Mrs Olson’s sister Mrs Swenson. Mrs Carl Leverens of Minneapolis visited Otto Quilot’s family. Erick Nelson was noted.
Reports of hay storage by Jobs Bomats near 100 tons, residents visiting Aug Olson and Aug Johnson, and several trips to Kandiyohi Lake Elia Lake Lillian and Atwater. Local events include Fourth of July program at A J Olson’s with Rev Johnson, a mid summer festival with Dr Sundbeck, and a parochial school closing ceremony for 61 students.
