Willmar Fire Department Looks to Alarm System and Transport

The Willmar Volunteer Fire Department held its yearly meeting at Odd Mellow's Hall with the annual banquet. Chief C C Selvig presided and elections chose W S Johnson as secretary and new chiefs. Selvig urged an up-to-date alarm system and better transport, citing seven-year losses and high premiums. A talk by Marcoltin of the W S Nott Co advocated a motor combination chemical and hose unit. Oyster supper followed. Royal Neighbors announce a supper January 26 at Carlson Hall from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Western Minnesota Teachers Association Meet at Granite Falls

The Western Minnesota Teachers Association holds its 13th annual meeting in Granite Falls February 11 to 13, 1915. County and City Superintendents meet Feb 11 with discussion on the Minnesota Educational Commission report. Friday features Elizabeth Hall and Mabel Carney talks. round tables, then Pattingill of Michigan. Saturday morning includes C. C. Swain and Pattingill addresses.

Obituary and Community Notes from Kimball and Willmar

Andrew Norine died at his Kimball home on January 9 after a tumor illness. Born November 15, 1880 in Bergsji Sweden, he immigrated with parents in 1882 to Lake Elizabeth, later held managerial roles at Kandiyohi and Kimball, married Hilma Carlson in 1905, and leaves two daughters Myrtle and Ruby, his mother Mrs. Jonas Norine, a wife, siblings, and relatives. Funeral held January 12 in Kandiyohi. many relatives attended. The Norine family expressed deep sympathy. Seniors at Willmar High will present a program January 22 with student readings, music, and a Caesar play. Epworth League social at the Swedish Methodist church slated for January 27 with multiple musical numbers and remarks.

Svea Farmers Club Plans January 22 Meeting

The Svea Farmers Club will hold a regular meeting Friday evening January 22 at School District No. 55. A good program is planned and all farmers interested in silos are especially urged to attend. Everyone is welcome.

The Political Tinker at Seminary in English

Holberg's comedy The Political Tinker will be staged by Seminary students in the near future in English translation by O J Campbell and Frederick Schenck. The play follows a 19th century Norwegian hit and is slated for delivery by the Osgeo Society around February 22. The piece highlights translations and past Norwegian successes at the Seminary. Also noted is Fire Chief Selvig's report showing Willmar pays 15000 yearly in insurance premiums while fire losses average 4200, prompting tax concerns on small Minnesota towns versus larger cities. Martinius Sand, a Gjévik merchant, died December 18 after a brief illness of pneumonia. Gilbert Q. Sand of this city mourns with wife and two children who visited Norway last summer.

Discriminating Fire Tax and Local Team Elections

The Red Wing Property Owners Federation warns of unfair discrimination as Minneapolis efforts aim to reduce a fire tax while nine million dollars in deficits have been paid by smaller risk owners over 21 years. Town basketball team elects William Johnson captain and Herbert Hengstler manager, with practice and set games to follow. Philathea class names Adelia Peterson president Ella Swenson vice president Winnie Dahleen secretary treasurer and C J Johnson to lead after Mrs Oberg’s departure. Attorney Swenson of Atwater visited on Monday.

Fatal Train Collision In Howard Lake Area

Five members of the McLean family were involved in a fatal collision with eastbound train No. 28 near Howard Lake. A 14 year old son was instantly killed. daughter Elizabeth, 6, died en route to St Paul. 10 year old Jean suffered serious injuries. 8 year old Mary escaped with minor cuts. father A D McLean sustained crushed legs and critical injuries. The mother and others were uninjured. The family had just left church when the accident occurred as they crossed the tracks. The engine reportedly traveled at least sixty miles per hour and did not whistle. The relief and medical teams transported the injured to Howard Lake and St Paul for care. The McLean family had moved to Howard Lake from Delhi last October.

Nordic Singing Society entertains friends at seminary hall

An informal program featured Mr F P B Hong as master of ceremonies. John Dale read an original poem and offered songs. Impromptu speeches by T C Aubert BE Wellin and L C Thorpe. Guests joined in a grand march, then a light lunch and further singing before departure.

Lines of Work for the Short Course at University of Minnesota

The Agricultural Extension Division of Minnesota University, with local aid, will lead three focused tracks at the upcoming short course. Women will discuss foods, sanitation, textiles, and home topics while men hear talks and see demonstrations on draft horses, dairy and beef cattle, milk and meat production, and growing corn, clover, alfalfa, and small grains. Emphasis on corn and alfalfa. Watch local papers for notices.

Willmar area churches announce a packed slate for Sunday and weeknights. Bethel Lutheran lists Swedish services with a hymn and solo program led by Amy Fridlund and Soderlund, plus a 7:30 p m service. Presbyterian hosts Rev. Alexander G Patterson, Lutheran Free plans a Thursday prayer meeting and Friday 2:30 p m Ladies meeting, and English evening services Sunday. Norw Luth Synod details Sunday school at 10:30 a m and English evening at 7:30 p m with choir Thursday. First Methodist covers 10:30 a m service and 7:30 p m evening, Epworth League, and quarterly conference with Dr Jordan. Swedish Mission posts Thursday and Friday preaching, plus Sunday schedule and Ladies Aid coffee social Jan 29. First Church of Christ Scientist offers Truth service at 10:45 a m and 8 p m Wednesday, with a reading room hours. Numerous visits and entertainments fill the week from Minneapolis to St Paul with Mrs Winney Eyelet Club hosting tomorrow. Community life centers on nurse visits, theater music at Dreamland, and Woodmen installations with many residents traveling to Twin Cities and nearby towns.

Willmar Tractor Manufacturing opens to public in Willmar

Yesterday the Willmar Tractor Manufacturing Co opened its plant to the public serving refreshments to about 300 visitors. Farmers and local business people toured the facility, noted its scale, and saw a tractor completed with more to come. Thirty-three workers are employed with plans for expansion and a front building addition to house offices. The company aims to produce one tractor daily at full capacity and grow its role in the city’s industry. The annual stockholders meeting is underway with several Twin Cities stockholders present.

Seminary Falls to Benson in 32 to 23 Shown

Seminary basketball traveled to Benson Monday and lost 32 to 23. D. L. Taylor starred for Benson with 11 points while Canton contributed for the Seminary. Upcoming rematch is set for Saturday on the Seminary floor with lineup listed and fouls noted. Mrs. A. A. Anderson hosts Synod church Sunday school teachers Friday evening.
