Twenty-One Willmar Boys Back On One Ship

Willmar readers learn that twenty one local men landed safely aboard the S S Seattle from Brest France. Among them are Ole Kallevig Tallack Johnson Alfred Olson George Olson Emil Aspaas Edwin Erickson Nels Anderson Casper Skinro­s Gustaf Anderson Stephenie Andrew Johnson Elmer J. son Chas Ramsey and others. Sergt Robert Johnson and Corporal Dan Burns arrived at Hoboken on the U S Cruiser Seattle and the group were quartered at Camp Mills per Emil Aspaas who served as city reporter. A noted former county road engineer Herbert Waddell is mentioned in connection with future events.

Bethel Lutheran Holds Annual Business Meeting

Bethel Lutheran church held its annual meeting on January 14. The new constitution expands voting rights to women, increases deacons from four to six, and trustees from four to five. Officers for three years include Isaac Johnson and C. G. Eckwall. Theodore J. Sampson serves two years. Pastor salary rises to 1400. Various reports show 1918 receipts total 4549.17 with missions and denominations funded. A Lutheran Brotherhood branch formed with 146 members.

Vinje Lutheran Church Holds Annual Meeting and Reforms

Vinje Lutheran Church held its annual meeting on Monday January 13 reporting extensive improvements including a $2700 heating system financed by the city plant and renovations. The session notes a total 55 voting members present, new officers elected, increased minister salary, and funds raised for missions and charities across church groups. The Ladies Aid Mission Society and Young Ladies Society Ben Acta conducted separate meetings with officers elected and pledges for foreign and home missions.

Milkman Builds Up Herd With Wis Holsteins Purchase

Milkman Emil P. Nelson recently bought a carload of purebred Holstein cows from breeders at Oxford Wisconsin. Six animals are bred to a champion sire Tax Abstract Ready. The County Auditor has the tax abstract ready to send to the State Auditor and Tax Commission. Taxes levied for 1918 total forty three two four six eight point zero eight dollars.

Legislature Sees Shakeup In Committees And Taxation Debate

The Minnesota legislature faced a reshuffle as reactionaries failed to unite House members against the League and Labor backed factions. Theodore Christianson of Lac Qui Parle aided Nolan as speaker but resisted broader alignments. Christianson introduced a key bill making corporations prove charges of public utility rates, shifting the burden from producers to utilities. Senate chairmanships went to Gandrud with influence on Markets and Marketing and several committees, while League farmers did not receive chairmanships. Also listed are Armenian and Syrian Relief Campaign directors from Kandiyohi County and news of Henry Johnson’s return from Camp Lewis.

Fire Devours Nelgron’s Restaurant in New London

A Saturday forenoon blaze in New London destroyed Nelgron’s restaurant and home after an explosion in a nearly full gasoline can near coffee urns. Mrs. Nelson suffered burns, others escaped unharmed. Firefighters fought three hours to save nearby storefronts and buildings. Property loss estimated with $3500 value. insurance $800 on building and $200 on contents. Local volunteers and community members organized support, including cash purses totaling over $500.

Local Farm Loan Directors Elected in Kandiyohi County

Kandiyohi County National Farm Loan association held its annual meeting in Willmar with directors elected. C. O. Bergquist J. S. Anderson Henning Oqllander Peter Rodman L. E. Wicklund C. C. Thompson named directors. C. C. Bargqui became president Henning Ola der vice president and William Olson secretary treasurer. F. E. Croon and M. O. Kramao served on loan committees. Books were audited. loans total 150000 with ten more nearing completion.

Plan Reception for Soldiers by Willmar Club

At a Willmar Commercial Club meeting a committee was formed to arrange a Soldiers Reception and to work on a Kandiyohi County soldiers memorial. A homecoming banner will hang across Fourth Street opposite the depot. The club approved funds for boulevard trees and planned the February annual banquet. Officers were re-elected: T. OG Gilbert president, F. G. Handy vice president, R. W. Stanford secretary, C. W. Odell treasurer. Members’ military dues are remitted.
