World War Veterans of America organize a Willmar Post. First meeting held Monday evening. BE. R. Creach is president and G. M. Giddings secretary. Post organized under its constitution and preamble to aid veterans and promote welfare and liberty in the United States.
The Sophia L. Rice Auxiliary to the U S W V held its 1922 officers installation at Carlson's Hall with Julia Johnston named president and other officers identified. A banquet followed at the Masonic Temple. Also noted are lectures by Miss Mary Chase, IOOF badge ceremonies for two charter members, and Epiphany and Swedish Society events at St Luke's and Carlsons Hall.
The Willmar Choral Society advances Handel's Messiah with rapid rehearsals at the Junior High School Auditorium. Emil Lundquist becomes Vice President and Austin Sundberg secretary after a weekly meeting. A tentative February 28 date is announced with more details to follow. The Hanscom Post American Legion banquet is set for February 17.
The St. Luke's Episcopal Church annual meeting reviewed a year of work with Rev. Walter H. Stowe reporting on activities. J. H. Wiggins resigned as warden after forty years due to his wife’s illness. Albin C. Garl 800 elected to fill the vacancy. Vestrymen and other officers were reappointed or elected and conference plans noted. Royal Neighbors installed officers at Carlson's Hall with a slate led by Oracle Taura Hatlin. Eifel Holm heads to Milwaukee for a teachers convention, with Mrs. Holm visiting. Minnesota Dairymen's Association to hold its 44th annual convention January 17–19 at Hutchinson featuring buttermaking and cheese prizes. The January Swedish Literary Society meeting at Carlson Hall features Rev. Franklin as main speaker and Svea chorus.
The Willmar Fire Department and Relief Association held their annual meeting and elected officers. Chief William Bjornberg and Ass't Chief Hjalmer Ruud were named to lead the department, with Jalmer Person as Captain and Oscar Sattergren as Lieutenant. Edwin Selvig was secretary treasurer, and a finance committee was chosen. The Relief Association elected officers led by Hjalmar Ruud as president and Wm C Johnson treasurer, with Mike Manning as trustee and Mike M. Bjorn elected delegate. The association reported excellent finances, approved $160 in claims, and increased benefits.
The annual installation of the United Spanish War Veterans was held at City Hall after a banquet at the Masonic Temple hosted by the Veterans for G A R members and the U S W V Ladies Auxiliary. About forty attended as C J Freeberg was elected Commander and officers were installed for the coming year.
January Community Thrift Day draws big crowds as merchants report growing turnout. Prizes awarded include items such as a woolen blanket a hog and various goods. Kandiyohi Community Club to hold annual meeting at Whittier schoolhouse on Friday January 13 at 8 pm with a program and refreshments.
The Men's Athletic Club will hold a meeting at the High School gym on Monday night January 16. Members are urged to attend as the club contemplates its future given a reduced membership from last winter. Doors open at 6 30 and the meeting starts at 8 p m.
C. J. Axeen and Hilder Haas of New London were jailed on drunkenness and liquor sale charges. Haas arrested Jan 4, jailed 15 days. Axeen arrested Jan 3, bail set at 800 dollars, with trial pending in district court.
An unusually large gathering at the Lutheran Free Church yearly session notes 36 new members with 11 added later, praise for Ladies Aid, and plans for Young People Federation. at First National Bank, C W Odell and others elected to the board with J Albert Peterson reappointed VP and cashier LeRoy Christian as assistant cashier.
Vinje Lutheran church held its annual business meeting last Monday with strong attendance. Rev. Arnt Vaaler reported the year’s work. A Struxness presented finances showing receipts 6171.82 and disbursements 5694.94. Officers elected include President Rev. Vaaler Vice President Nels Tallakson Secretary Ludvig Eltefson Treasurer Norman Tallakson Assistant Treasurer Thorwald Thorson Trustee Anton Thorgon Auditors C S Olson and E Thorpe Ushers W E Monson Kent Kiland Arthur Struxness Orta Sandbo Kern Anderson A Struxness delegate to the annual convention Herman Tallakeon alternate delegate. school committee Oscar Fauchald Ludvig Ellefson Iver Lindquist. Budget system adopted for local activities and Synodical budget.
The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners met at the courthouse for a five day session. William C. Johnson named chairman with N B Johnson as retiring vice chair. Dr J M Rains elected County Board of Health chair with W J De Vries and Ole Reigstad on the health committee. The Board filed its audit, re elected janitor Isaac Nordstrom, reappointed Highway Engineer H L Wadell, and set hearings for two new county roads Nos 26 and 27. A new school district was created between Swift and Kandiyohi counties. County printing bids went to Willmar Tribune. A workmen's compensation policy was authorized. The financial statement and official fee lists were approved. Deputy coroners were appointed to assist Coroner Dr J C Jacobs.
Christ Hennings was elected Commander. J. B. Boyd Senior Vice Commander. C. K. Lund Junior Vice Commander. Andrew Larson Sergeant. O. Z. Johnston Adjutant. Six remaining Willmar members attended the installation at the Bank of Willmar building. Afterward a six o’clock dinner at 327 Backer Avenue honored six veterans of the War of the Rebellion.
Bethel Lutheran congregation reported a flourishing year with 461 communicants 198 children and 240 Sunday School enrollment. Special offerings total 1860.32 plus 3470 in pledges for Gustavus Adolphus College and Augustana Seminary. New officers for Hanscom Post American Legion installed and a small slaughterhouse warming hut burned near the city. John Plath and Hymry Rose of Hancock attended Barker’s hog sale after traveling here.
St Cloud and Willmar played a hard fought basketball game with fast breaks and pivot moves. St Cloud relied on a late surge while Willmar struggled with fouls and shooting, Grace led Willmar with three field goals and five free throws as Westgard was disqualified.
