Young Swenson Returns From German Prison

The 5. M. Swenson family in Svea notes Christmas telegrams confirming Harry M. Swenson, formerly of Willmar, returned from Rastatt prison in good health. He was captured in September and spent two months as a prisoner after joining Co A 139th Infantry, leaving Willmar Feb 26, 1918 for Camp Dodge and going overseas last May.

Move to Abolish Mon Ongalia Game Refuge

Henning Olander and Albert J. Nordstedt circulated a petition Monday to abolish the Mon Ongalia Game Refuge. They say many original signers misunderstood the signings and now most have signed again. They cite a possible hearing and urge residents to decide if the reserve should continue, aiming to preserve some land for Sibley State Park.

Rice plans trans Atlantic flight toward North Pole voyage

Appeal to Willmar Red Cross Workers for Refugee Garments

Red Cross workers in Willmar are urged to visit the Red Cross rooms on Wednesdays and Fridays to produce 550 refugee garments. Surgical dressings and knitting have been suspended. finish and hand in any in progress items. The National Headquarters notes ample stock for soldiers at winter’s end, but refugee garments take precedence now and later needs will grow.

Willmar Couple Marries in Mankato After Army Leave

Miss Helen M. Wright daughter of conductor and Mrs H V Wright of Willmar married George F Morse Jr on November 5 at the home of Mr and Mrs George Morse Sr in Mankato. The groom was home on furlough from training in Austin Texas and the marriage was not announced publicly until his discharge. Miss Wright grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School and later taught in Blue Earth County.

Horticultural society holds annual meeting in county court

The County Horticultural Society met at the Court House last Saturday with S. E. Magnuson as chair. Minutes were approved, and the treasurer reported about $40 remaining year end. Delegates Selvig and Rodegeb discussed the State meeting and society growth. Members explored new member premiums, dues allocation, and tips to boost local engagement. Upcoming officers include John Wicklund as President and Magnuson as Vice President. secretary treasurer C. C. Selvig.

Chickens Fire Singes Tail Feathers in Willmar Shed

Fire department responded Sunday afternoon to a small blaze in a chicken shed at 417 9th Street South. Louis Hendrickson was lining the coop when tar paper ignited from a water heater, sparking a rapid fire. neighbors aided with a bucket brigade to keep the fire from spreading before firefighters arrived. A milk notice follows about new city deliveries, and a troop train from Camp Worden carried about 200 coast artillery men through town en route from Canada.

Wounded Soldier Recovers Will Return Home Soon

Roy Wilson son of George and Mrs Wilson of Harrison has recovered from a wound received in action in France and expects to be sent back to his home soon. Alice Marion Johnson died December 21 of influenza pneumonia in Minneapolis formerly of Willmar aged 10. Funeral December 24 at Welanders with burial at Lake Wood. Survived by parents three sisters Fridjoff and George brothers and four Nazareth English Lutheran Church girls as pallbearers.

Public Schools Require Health Permit for Influenza Pupils

Health Officer JOHN M RAINS orders that any pupil with influenza or from homes with cases must obtain a physician signed permit confirming no epidemic disease before returning to school. No permit before five days after the last clinical case.

Bob Dunn Highway plan eyed for Minnesota trail

An early January meeting in Willmar will organize the Minnesota division of a proposed motor trail from Taylors Falls to Sioux Falls. Prominent attendees include A Zee Auto Department Rand McNally, Chas Babcock, and Minnehaha County Good Roads Ass'n secretary. The highway would pass through Sioux Falls Del Rapids Jasper Pipestone Marshall Willmar St Cloud and Taylors Falls linking with Wisconsin and Escanaba Michigan trunk lines. It may extend to Yankton and connect with the Lincoln Highway in Nebraska. The road could be named the Bob Dunn Highway. Soldier Gerald Tollefson and his mother visited the Dale home before furlough in Granite Falls en route to Al l entown Penn.
