Higgins of the M. P. on stand for roads workers

In the Western wage arbitration hearing, J. W. Higgins, general manager of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, testified as the railroad's star witness. He explained wage growth for engineers and firemen on major Western lines and resisted eight hour day proposals while noting potential expenditures on property and other employees. He declined to equate railroad trades with industrial pay scales and faced tough questions from Firemen’s president Carter and Grand Chief Engineer Stone.

Annual Commercial Club Banquet in Willmar Hall

The Willmar Commercial Club held its annual banquet last Wednesday at Odd Fellows Hall with about ninety business men attending. Judge Gilbert presided over the meal, and Mrs. B. Y. McNairy sang as Miss Nellia Robbing played, followed by Victrola selections. A joint debate on the Kandiyohi County sanatorium, pitting Dr. Hill against Dr. Johnson, drew keen interest with no decision reached. questions were invited afterward. Banquet service was credited to Mrs. James Sanderson and assistants.

Obituary Hans Larson of New London Passes Away

Hans Larson of New London and longtime Burbank township resident died Friday morning after a sudden heart failure. He was 74 years old, born January 31, 1841 in Norway, emigrated 1870, married 1872 to Oline Haugen, farmed in Burbank before moving to New London in 1899. Funeral was Monday at 1 PM from his home and 2 PM at the Norwegian Lutheran church, interment Oak Hill. Pallbearers were Gunder Iverson, George Johnson, Olaus Stenerson, Hans Halvorson, John Amundson, Tobias Solseth.

Many Local Residents Attend Social and School Meetings

Numerous residents visit relatives in nearby cities and attend county rural school teachers meetings, teachers’ associations, and church guilds. Guests include Miss Edna Kiland, Miss Florence Anderson, Miss Jeannette Ives, Miss Ellen Larsen, Miss Anne Elfstrum, Miss Ruth Gilbert, and many others from Kandiyohi, Pennock, Atwater, and Salem.

Club Presents Statue To Library In Honor Of Mrs Rice

The Monday Afternoon Club gave the Public Library a bust of Abraham Lincoln to honor Mrs Sophia L Rice on the first anniversary of her death. Attendees included library board exmembers the librarian and Mrs Rice’s relatives. President D N Tallman spoke on Lincoln’s heroism and Mrs Rice’s educational contributions to Willmar.

Osseo Banquet and Community Notices Prompt Osseo Society Event

The Osseo Society plans its annual banquet next Monday evening February 22 at the Seminary building with blue and white decor, a four course banquet, toasts by Prof. Pederson, and games. Old Seminary students are urged to attend. Holberg's The Political Tinker is postponed. Harrison Union Telephone Co officers and linemen elected at Spicer February 6 include Claus Anderson as President and S. M. Dahl as Vice President with several directors and line men listed. The Fahlun Baptist church youth program is set for February 18 at 7 30 p.m. with songs, readings, and a benediction. The Minne 50th Cattle Breeders Association meets February 19 at the St Anthony Park experiment station with speakers. Eighth Grade Central School sleighing party became a Valentine party at Frances Parmeter’s invitation with about 50 attending at the Methodist parsonage. Miss Anna Nelson’s home hosted a young people gathering with music and a heart themed supper for ten. Glenwood residents Mr and Mrs L M Landing announce the marriage of Olive Johanna to Dr Wayne W Woolley in Glenwood last Sunday February 14. Mrs Joseph Stepanek and Miss Victoria Johnson return to Wheelock North Dakota after months with sister Mrs Chas Eckwall.

County Schools Oppose the Bill at County Meeting

A county school officers gathering at the courthouse drew 151 in attendance from 69 districts, with 14 districts sending petitions to oppose a rural school bill. The meeting, led by County Superintendent Frederickson, adopted resolutions opposing the bill and a proposed teachers retirement fund, and praised rural teachers while thanking the county superintendent.
