Fire at Willmar High School Causes Smoke Spell

An incipient fire in a Willmar high school laboratory during Friday noon caused alarm. Janitor B J Greenfield opened a locked door and extinguished the blaze, confined to a lower cabinet area with little damage. The incident highlights lacking fire extinguishing facilities in school buildings and may prompt Board of Education action to equip with extinguishers and hydrants.

Agricultural Meetings Schedule in Willmar Districts

Industrial Depart ment Willmar high school lists meetings across districts 44 63 18 48 36 61 57 45 with times from February 19 to March 12 focusing on corn growing dairying and agricultural co operation. Invitations extended to all. Also notes on a Valentine Party hosted by Miss Clara Rasmussen for the Normal class and visits by agricultural instructor Edwin Mayland en route to Fargo North Dakota for cooperative work. Ladies Aid to meet February 21.

Francis Willard Memorial Meeting

Swedish Mission Y. P. S. Monthly Literary Social

The Swedish Mission Y. P. S. will hold a monthly literary social this Thursday evening February 15 in the church parlors. Dredge Accident Injures Cambridge Man at Willmar Depot

Charles Wentworth, 58, was hurt when a dredge being unloaded at the Willmar depot toppled and broke a leg above the ankle. He was taken to Willmar hospital. Wentworth is a visitor from Cambridge, Minnesota. Senator C. W. Odell spent yesterday in the cities on business.

Trouble for Booze Buyer at Willmar Seminary

An investigation by Sheriff Boide traced intoxicating liquor to a Willmar Seminary student from Montevideo who bought it in Raymond and shared it with peers. The student was fined 30 dollars and jailed 30 days. his father paid by check. The youth was expelled and not reinstated.

Prize Corn Lest at Willmar Corn Show Dispute

A prize nine ears of Silver Mine corn were taken from the Beckman exhibit at the Farmers Short Course corn show. The note asks the culprit to return the ears to L. McNelly or N. C. Nelson, warning that Beckman valued the corn and hoped to enter it for the State Silver Cup and a $25 prize at the State Fair. The item also lists local notices and personal items about residents of Willmar, Minnesota, including travel, visits, births, and church activities.

St Paul Symphony to Tour Northwest in Six Weeks

The St Paul Symphony Orchestra led by Walter Rothwell departs March 24 for a six week spring tour covering fifty three cities. Fifty five musicians plus staff will travel by a Great Northern Railway special train with Willmar hosting the opening March 25 concert. Louis W. Hill chairs the orchestra association and may join part of the tour. he extols the educational value for St Paul and the wider territory. The group, six years old, has become a leading national musical organization. Cities listed include St Cloud Brainerd Bemidji Spokane Vancouver Seattle Portland Missoula Butte Billings and many more across the Northwest and into Canada. Edmund A. Stein is general manager. Miss Gertrude O Hanlon is tour manager.

Obituary for Mrs C B Hutchins of Mt Pleasant Texas

Mrs C B Hutchins wife of Train master Hutchins of the Cotton Belt died suddenly at the home of J W Geer in Mt Pleasant Texas. She was born April 3 1861 near Crystal Springs Massachusetts and married August 14 1884 in Winchester Illinois. Survived by husband three daughters Mae Gisch Carson La Crosse San Antonio and Gertrude Houtekins Mt Pleasant. Funeral held at Methodist church with Rev N A Seale. interment in Masonic cemetery.

Seminary boys overwhelm Giants in basketball game

The Seminary edged the Giants 48 to 12 in a late week basketball game. Osseo Society held a brief Saturday meeting to elect committees. Students discussed attending tonight’s set and refreshments costs. Various residents visited home over weekend including Paul Redin, Sandy Swanson, Clara and Anna Clausen. Swedish Lutheran Ladies Aid plans a church gathering February 22 with refreshments served by designated members. Carrie Rouch from Hendrickson arrived Saturday to stay through winter with her sister Mrs Theo Mika.

Willmar High School narrowly tops visiting Independents 33 32

In a fast and rough battle, Willmar edges Minneapolis West Side Independents 33 to 32. Willmar’s Taylor and Carlson led scoring with strong defense from Nordstrom and Branton stepping in for Hank Johnson. Way and McKeon starred for the visitors as the game remained tied or led by small margins through the late minutes.
