The Willmar city tax levy for next year is set at 68.4 mills up from 58.0 last year. The rise reflects higher school costs due to larger teacher salaries and maintenance of city schools. Also listed are marriage licenses births and a notice of Mildred Skoglund’s travel.
The program features Mabel Normand in The Slim Princess where a princess gains size via a rubber suit but this ends when it bursts after a pin. Also shown is The Lost City episode with Bert Lytell and a Snub Pallard comedy and a Goldwyn Bray pictograph. Starting Monday the McDermid players perform four days with a ladies free Monday sale.
A Norwegian Lutheran Synod congregation and Solomon Lake church held confirmation for a class of 30 youths last Sunday. Ten were interviewed in Norwegian and twenty in English, with names listed for both language groups.
A Sunburg group of six hunters traveled to Cook County near Grand Marais and harvested three moose. Oscar Iverson Julius Sandvik Gilchrist Dr Sam Shipstead Jule Kildahl Olaus Gandrud and N T Gunnarson participated with Kil Dahl taking a bull and Gandrud Gunnarson returning with large bulls. Gunnarson required two days to skid his moose to a road then ship by boat to Duluth for express delivery. The piece notes the town’s interest in Gunnarson’s奇 carcass prior to its return home. A separate obituary mentions the infant son of Mr and Mrs James Smith of Whitefield township who died after four days on December 12.
A large community Christmas tree is planned for the Willmar Yuletide festival on Thursday at 7 30 pm near Pacific Avenue and Fourth Street West opposite the Great Northern Station. The American Legion and Women's Civic Club organize, with Santa Claus visiting and schoolchildren preparing carols under local teachers. A parade of volunteers and a theater program for under 12s are part of the event with many city groups contributing to the first town wide Yuletide celebration.
A proclamation for a city event in Willmar Minnesota directs traffic cooperation on Fourth Street and Pacific Avenue, asks businesses to close 7:30 to 8:30 pm, and notes the event is organized by the Woman's Civic League and the American Post with local donations. Victor E. Lawson Jr. signed the notice on December 15, 1920.
A Dec 11 wedding at the bride’s home unified Edith Forsberg and Clarence P Reed in a ceremony led by Rev J Renwick McCullough. The couple planned a short honeymoon to the Twin Cities and will reside on the groom’s farm in Raymond after Jan 1 1921.
A county Red Cross Roll Call report lists townships and villages with chairs and totals raised totaling 1111.90. Willmar city contributions reach 1062.42, with ward by ward lists totaling 271.50 in the second ward and 178.50 in the third. State Farm solicitation adds 25.00 and Tag Day returns 391.42, with a grand city total of 1062.42 and a note that scattered reports may adjust figures slightly.
A Federation of Labor figure will visit the city this Thursday for a planned appearance. Police say security will be tight and the event is set for the afternoon at a central venue with details to follow.
Edmond Nassett, a joiner at the Sash and Door Factory west of the city, lost his first three fingers when a revolving knife struck a loosened knot as a board moved suddenly. The severed digits were lacerated and crushed. he received hospital treatment at Jemar Hospital and remains there awaiting healing.
Minneota High School meets Willmar High School next Saturday evening at the new gym in a key early season game. Last year’s second district champions and undefeated squad look to repeat despite no graduations, with Coach Treblicock guiding a poised Willmar squad in a high intensity matchup.
Mayor Lawson presented a charter proposal to the commission. Members listed include R. W. Stanford D. R. Berk ness and J. H. Martin with twenty present. The commission adjourned to reconvene on call of the President.
