Street lights cut down to save coal

City Council restricts street lighting to top lanterns after Monday decision to conserve coal. Mayor and police to decide burn times until after Christmas, with school activities possibly halted to prolong coal supply. Sports scrimmage set for Dec. 21 and Eastern Star officers elected for the year.

Christmas Music Next Sunday at Presbyterian Church

The Presbyterian church chorus of twenty three voices under Prof H E Meyer will render Christmas music next Sunday Dec 16 at 730 pm. Program includes Noel, There were Shepherds, All My Heart This Night Rejoices, Come Near Ye Nations, solo The Holy Child, carols O Fair, Wondrous Holy Night and The Shepherds Christmas, among readings, offertory, and benediction. Also notes local civic items and community updates about ditch No 37 hearings at the courthouse and visits by local residents and military personnel.

Litchfield and Willmar Debate Round Captures Audience

A Friday debate at Willmar High School featured Litchfield and Willmar teams arguing the resolution that states should set minimum wage schedules for unskilled labor. Willmar won unanimously. HaroId Gilbert and Douglas Hunt led Willmar, with Lil Van Deneen standout for Litchfield. Judges included officials from Benson, Morris, and a district chairman. The event energized local students as Willmar advances toward the Seventh District championship. Other happenings note Mrs. Ed Hitch visiting Olivia and Mr. John Wicks taking a Minneapolis telegraph operator post.

Le Sueur Boy Marries Hawaiian Princess Becomes Land Baron

The story follows Luger Belliveau from a Minnesota farm to Hawaii as he marries Princess Kiluchanalani, heir to Queen Liliuokalani’s fortune and estates. Belliveau served in the Philippine campaign, later becoming a plantation owner, while his wife rose from princess to widow of Representative Wilcox before their marriage. Mrs DeSchane Dies in St Johns Township

Mrs. Margaret DeSchane died at her son in law and daughter C L Roske home in St Johns township last Thursday December 6. She was fifty seven years aften months and two days old at death. The remains were shipped to Minneapolis Monday for funeral services. Mr and Mrs DeShane arrived about a month ago to spend the winter with their daughter.

Miss Minnig Peterson returned to work at Andrew Peterson Furniture after a short absence. John Feig of Atwater came through for ditch business. C G Hoglund spent Tuesday in Kerkhoven.

New apparatus tested at a Willmar fire

A fire at the Wilmar Sash and Door Factory drew Willmar’s new fire truck into its first practical test. In under seven minutes the crew had a steady water stream on the blaze and quickly gained control, confining the damage to the exhaust drum. Chief Selvig was away, but reports say the engine worked like a charm. John Williams, a longtime honorary member, praised the apparatus as the crew drilled with it since arrival and will continue weekly indoor drills.

Boys Proud of Sweaters at Camp Dodge

William A Olson of Truck Co 1 213 Ammunition Train Camp Dodge Iowa writes of a recent week with wrestling boxing and movies at the camp. He recalls receiving $18 from a friend in Ringville county and eight dollars in Kandi yohi county, plus a Red Cross sweater wristlets and woolen socks from Red Cross workers. He notes cold snow and many new soldiers arriving, with Bible class and services planned and a Des Moines quartet singing.

Questionnaires Sent to Draft Registrants Saturday

The Local Board schedules mailing of draft questionnaires starting Saturday with nine sent that day and ninety daily after. Registrants must reply within seven days of mailing. Gov Burnquist appoints Judge G E Qvale and attorneys Otterness and Gilbert to advise registrants in filling forms. Also notes Electric Service Station relocates to new site near Skoog Lundquist building opposite post office. Miss Mabel Jorgenson of Sunbury visits with sister Mrs Henry Forsberg after returning from Minneapolis.

Dead Man Found on the Prairie Near City Limits

A man about 60, 5 feet 4 inches, 160 pounds, with black hair, wearing a red mackinaw coat and new overalls, was found dead on a Crasswell farm meadow west of the city. Coroner suspects freezing. no identification found beyond fifty dollars and a saloon card from Green Isle Minnesota. Undertaker kept the body pending identification. large crowd viewed remains.
