Widow of Dr Cassel Burned at Litchfield Tragedy

A fatal gasoline explosion in Litchfield last Sunday afternoon killed Julia Augusta Cassel, widow of Dr Henry E Cassel. She was burned severely while starting a stove after cleaning with gasoline, died approx 48 hours later at Robertson hospital. She was born Aug 1 1878 in Cassel town and is survived by her mother, five brothers and one sister. Annual meeting of Ladies Society of Synod church reported a successful year. new officers elected and a $75 gift presented to Rev J N Andersen.

Willmar State Hospital for Inebriates to Open in Ten Days

The state hospital at Willmar will be ready to receive patients within ten days as the state board of control returns from a visit. A daily fee of 1 is set for voluntary patients while those committed by probate courts will be treated free. Dr H A Tomlinson, former St Peter superintendent, oversees opening plans to remove alcohol from patients without drugs, per the St Paul Dispatch. A separate notice invites a Swedish Lutheran church bazaar in New London on Dec 12–13 hosted by Willing Workers and Soroois societies with programs, an auction, and baked goods.

Norwegian Authors Discussed at Y P S Talk

Next Monday night Hon L C Thorpe will speak in English before the Lutheran Synod church Young People's society on Norwegian author Ludvig Holberg. This is the second talk in a series on Norwegian authors at the Y P S meetings. Last month Prof A C Pedersen spoke on Henrik Wergeland. The series will continue through the winter. Peter Heimdahl spent one day last week in the twin cities on business matters.

Former Pastor Dr L G Almen Dies in Carthage

Last Friday many old friends and former parishioners in this county learned of the unexpected death of Dr L G Almen at Carthage on Thursday Dec 7. He formerly led Swedish Lutheran churches at New London and Maureland and was well known countywide. Despite five years of diabetes he recently felt well and preached the previous Sunday. He was a man of strong personality and firm character who stood for the right and influenced public affairs.

Pioneer Lutheran Minister Lars Almen Biography

The obituary chronicles Rev Lars Gustaf Almen a pioneer temperance advocate in Kandiyoli County. Born March 30 1846 in Dalsland Sweden he immigrated in 1870 to the United States and pursued ministry, serving multiple churches and conducting missionary work across Minnesota South Dakota and beyond. The union with Elise Christine Johnson produced ten children and he later focused on fundraising for Gustavus Adolphus College.

Death and obituaries mark East Lake Lillian notes

Lake Lillian correspondent reports the death of August Bitzen after eight months illness from bone tuberculosis. Born in Ostergird Vestra Bitterna parish Sweden, he immigrated in the seventies and settled in 1884. He served in local offices and left a wife and four children plus siblings in Minneapolis and Sweden. Funeral held yesterday at Fairview cemetery.

Ostlund Marries Larson in Minneapolis Home Ceremony

Ostlund formerly of Pennock Minn now of Minneapolis wed Hilda M Larson on November 30 at the bridegroom's sister’s home. Rev G Anderson officiated with maid of honor Hilda Bergman and best man Andrew Danielson. Out of town guests included Lars Ostlund and several Bergstrom and Sather family members. The couple will reside at 3439 Garfield Avenue.

Fracas at St. Joe Ends With Stabbing Fight

A Thanksgiving spree at St Joseph ended in a stabbing when laborer Axel Nordstrom, working on a new building, was cut by Tony Steppe a fellow laborer. Steppe says the other man had tormented him and he defended himself with a knife. The injured man recovered by morning Steppe is jailed.

Special Meetings at Lutheran Free Church This Week

Special meetings are held this week at the Lutheran Free church with Rev. O. H. Sletten from Minneapolis Rev. J. S. Strand from Benson Rev. E. O. Larson from Eagle Lake Rev. M. Hanson of New London and the loyal pastor Rev. M. B. Michaelson. Attendance is lower due to cold weather. Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hawkinson of Spring Brook North Dakota visited Grove City then Cambridge while in town guests at Mrs. Anna Nyquist's home. The Hawkinson family has long been known in the area, six years ago living near Willmar.

Conductor Patnode Dies In Caboose Crash

Albert E Patnode freight conductor between Willmar and St Paul was burned to death when his caboose was struck by an incoming freight engine at Lexington Avenue. Carol Lansing a Willmar brakeman was thrown through a split side and only slightly injured. Both engines damaged and yards blocked all night.
