Cherry Mine Tragedy Survivor Details Calamity

Arnold Johnson son of Henry Johnson of Willmar recounts the Cherry mine disaster when over 300 miners were trapped and many died from fire and black damp. He describes the surface hay sparked fire, torch use, and cages dropping to the third vein, with carriages, rescues, and horrific injuries at the surface. The event ends with Arnold leaving mining, plans to stay home, and no clear direction yet. The report also mentions Cross Stamp sales by the Red Cross and local hotel news.

Odd Fellows Conference Held At Local Hall

A district conference of the IOOF met at Odd Fellows Hall with about 75 delegates from Atwater Kerkhoven Benson and Pennock. Grand Master Barber Grand Secretary Balter and Grand Patriarch McCullan attended with District Deputy Covell. Rev Crawford Grays spoke on how to improve the order and five Past Noble Grands were installed. A supper was served by the Rebecca lodge and the gathering was hailed as very successful. Also reported is the quiet wedding of Myrtle L Zent to William Steltz at the Lutheran Synod parsonage and four-generation Thanksgiving dinner at the Somerville home with Mrs Somerville aged 84. Licenses to wed issued include John Griggs and Hattie Johnson on Nov 24 and Louis VanderEinde and Johanna Mulder on Nov 29.

Forty Years Ago Fort Willmar First Rail and Telegraph

Forty years ago Willmar was opened to the outside world by rail and telegraph. The Pioneer Press recalls the first train and telegram exchange between Col William Crooks at Willmar and Supt Delano at St Paul. Norwegian traveling library arrives for Norwegians in Minnesota

Librarian Edith Frost has obtained a traveling library from the Minnesota Library Commission. It brings representative books by leading Norwegian writers and will be available for six months. The collection includes works by Aanrud, Ager, Bojer, Bull, Dahl, Dan, Flood, Foss, Friis, Gjellerup, Gloersen, Hanek, Homo, Ingemann, Jorgensten, Kraemmer, Lie, Loland, Mariager, Meyn, Rist, Stepmiak, and Thoresen. Miss Minnie Nelson of St. Paul visited the area last week.

Farmers Bring Coal Carload From Raymond Mutual

Prinsburg notes a carload coal ordered for mutual benefit of sharers. Several locals travel to Raymond for coal. Missing sister De Boer from Chicago assists at home while her brother-in-law John Terpstra awaits appendicitis surgery in Willmar. Thanksgiving services raised 71 dollars for Home missions.

Train brakeman Gallagher badly hurt in Russell accident

Ed Gallagher brakeman of Willmar city was badly injured when the train he was fixing a brake on moved and dragged him about three car lengths. He was taken to Willmar Hospital with severe bruises, a deep cut on the left foot, and a scalp wound. Doctor says no serious outcome unless complications arise. Church bazaar planned at New London hall December 9 and 10 by Sorosis and The Willing Workers of Lebanon church with booths, refreshments, and a program. Home Talent Play Nevada or the Lost Mine slated for Opera House December 18 with rehearsals under way. Miss Anna Nelson returned home from Pennock after visiting her grandmother.
