Kimball Piano Contest Begins This Week

The Street Fair contest for the county’s most popular young lady opens with three ballot boxes at Willmar drugstores. Votes cost one cent each. ballots and ballots boxes are public, with weekly tallies posted. The piano, a mahogany finish model valued at 375 dollars, will be exhibited at Andrew Peterson’s store before the fair and later in the Fine Arts Exhibit building. Existing ballots show Annie Nicholson 175, Rose Lawler Kandiyohi 100, Juliet Stephens 895, Annie Larnon 50, Inga M. Johnson 25, Alphia Otterness 25. Also noted are Flower Show plans, admission prices, a Chicago fortune teller, and local injuries details.

Northwestern Will Not Sell Willmar Telephon​e Plant

Willmar Minnesota August 23 1909 committee reports Northwestern Telephone Exchange Co will not sell its Willmar plant. Company states it will not sell to city or others and favors meeting at Minneapolis office with records available. Committee urges municipal exchange plan and underground wiring for business district. notes potential joint operation with electric plant and bids for certificates.

Mysterious disappearance of Mamre thresherman

Carl J. Stanghelle of Mamre vanished after attending to a new Advance thresher purchase in Willmar on Thursday night. Police and relatives seek him, with tickets story suggesting he may have headed west. His farm and family near Fessenden, North Dakota, await news as the machine he owned remains idle and the case unsettled.

Left Hand Loss At Willmar Sash Factory

Hugo Hoglund son of Peter Hoglund of 1182 Fifth Street suffered the loss of all four fingers on his left hand while grooving base blocks at the Willmar Sash and Door factory. He was hospitalized and reports say he may pursue either architecture or bookkeeping after recovery. The accident timing and cause remain unclear. The church social and upcoming events at the English M E church are noted along with Prof. N B Swalin's itineraries through northern Minnesota and the Dakotas.

Street Fair Fund Drive Starts in 1909 Appeals

Death mystery surrounds Willmar man found dead

H W Phiefer a stranger died at Willmar hospital on Sunday evening. Autopsy failed to reveal cause of death and relatives could not be located. Phiefer had come east, worked for Graham & Sons in Chicago, and was a railroad man with the Great Northern. Diary and papers found in Chicago aided investigators but no home address been found. He was 46 years old, formerly conductor and train master, with plans to move to Sioux City. Local officials and newspapers report on his abrupt death and the search for kin while noting possible foul play rumors that were unsubstantiated.

Obituary of Thomas H Dodds Great Northern Conductor

Thomas H Dodds longtime Great Northern passenger conductor died at Willmar hospital after poliomyelitis. He arrived Thursday to visit wife and son then fell ill, died Saturday. Remains moved to St Paul for funeral. Dodds was born in Iowa.
