August Olander, a longtime New London resident for forty nine years, died suddenly last Thursday evening. The city mourns the loss of a respected citizen as friends and neighbors express sorrow.
August Olander, born June 19, 1862 in Carver Minnesota, died after a long illness due to a severe cold and lagrippe that settled in the chest. Survived by his widow Mary Bergeson, he lived on a New London area farm after long service as school treasurer and church trustee.
In Willmar and New London mourn the death of Christian Christianson Birkeland born in Norway Aug 8 1860 who moved to America in 1871 and Willmar in 1872. He farmed on the Dovre Hills and served in local public life before passing away after a stomach cancer struggle. He leaves wife Louise two children Lydia and Theodore two brothers and two sisters plus many relatives. Funeral services were held in Bethel Church Willmar and Swedish Lutheran Church New London with extensive floral tributes and pallbearers named.
September 13 date for reopening the hearing on Judicial Ditch No 8 before Judge Quale at Willmar courthouse. The project could be the county’s largest ditching undertaking, running from Little Kandiyohi Lake southeast through Fahlun Lake Elizabeth East Lake Lillian into Meeker County, about 60 miles with 851 landowners affected. Main ditch to be 30 feet wide at bottom, up to 60 feet top, cost $206,026 with expected benefits $295,898. Attorneys T O Gilbert and L D Barnard represent petitioners. The hearing is expected to draw many county residents to the county seat and township offices.
The funeral occurred Monday August 21 with brief services at the home and church at 1 and 2 30. Rev Michaelson presided. Pallbearers were six nephews John and Chris Birkeland Chris and Albert Johnson Nels Elges Ross and Tosten Christianson. Interment was in Free Church cemetery. The deceased was an upright, independent thinker with strong Christian convictions and was remembered for his daily consistency.
Long Aug Ladies Aid will be entertained at the David Swenson home Thursday after noon and evening August 31. Ice cream will be served. Everyone welcome. Miss Selma Estvick returned from Pierpont South Carolina where she visited relatives. Several local families hosted visitors from Sioux City Donnelly Spicer and Fertile. Church services at Long Lake next Sunday.
Edw Pennington Miss Mabel Nelson and dozens of others spent Sundays and weekends visiting in the twin cities and nearby towns. Many locals and visitors headed to Proctor Detroit Minn Benson St Paul Minneapolis and Diamond Lake for short trips, visits with relatives, or work. Several residents began new jobs in rail offices stores and drug trade while others returned from extended trips abroad in the east.

Mesdames Samuel Nelson and Al Melin visit Crescent Beach cabin with Mrs N L Mowick of Minneapolis. They entertained Miss Amanda Erickson and Miss Eleanor Axness and later hosted a Monday gathering in honor of Miss Margaret Marshall with social time and refreshments.
Impressive confirmation services were held at the Lutheran Free church led by Rev M B Michaelson. Eleven catechumens were confirmed and the class is the eleventh and final one in his Willmar ministry before his transfer to Marinette Wisconsin. A reunion followed the next evening with the Covenant Society of the Norwegian Lutheran Free Church holding its sixth annual meeting featuring a banquet program and elections.

Gamble Robinson Commission Company of Willmar received word this morning that a lease has been signed for a modern warehouse at the foot of Sixth Street. Groundwork will start immediately to erect a two-building wholesale fruit complex beside the existing facility. The project aims to speed completion to meet growing demand in the area. Pastor Surprised at Priam Young People Society meeting Rev M B Michaelson of the Free church was unexpectedly honored with a purse and well wishes from attendees led by K T Rykken.
