Narrow Escape as Car Overturns Near Spicer

Four young people from this city had a narrow escape when their Studebaker touring car wrecked near Spicer en route to Willmar. The driver, Mr Allman’s son, was pinned under the car and freed by three men. All occupants suffered bruises and cuts but no serious injuries.

City Schools Prepare for Packed Term Across Buildings

Extreme enrollment pushes use of every room in Central and Industrial buildings for classes next term. Mechanical drawing shifts to finishing room, which may become a furniture store if no furniture is made. Cloak rooms are repurposed, and additional spare rooms become classrooms. Demand for a new Lincoln school grows as crowding forces four Lincoln rooms to host standard students in High School.

Health plays for children staged in the United States

Professionals write and coach health plays with specially trained children in roles from The Only Child to Little Benny. A child welfare exhibit with infant welfare nurses from the University of Minnesota assists parents on handling child feeding and training problems. An ice cream social by the Priam Ladies Aid at E. S. Barker’s home on August 24 raises funds for the Orphans Home with a short program and refreshments.

An ice cream social will be held at the Oak Park MBE church on Thursday evening August 17. A strong program features outside talent and local acts. You will be sorry if you miss it. Edgar Olson of this city collided with a car from Minneapolis Tuesday evening of that week. Both cars were damaged in the collision near Ball Park.

Moves His Stock to Open His New Dra Store

Fred J Hallim moves stock of drug store supplies to new premises on Litchfield Avenue ready for occupation. The space was rebuilt from part of Bergan Bros hardware room with a new display front installed by remodeler Paul Hedin and construction managed by Fred Poortinga.

Stolen Ford Touring Car Recovered at Spicer

The Ford touring car belonging to John Kavanaugh of Murdock stolen in this city Tuesday evening last week was recovered at Spicer last Friday afternoon. The owner was notified and drove the car back the same day.

Fire Destroys Atwater Home of C. F. O'Hair

The northwest Atwater residence of C F O H air was destroyed by fire at 3 am last Tuesday. Mrs O H air dropped a lamp while frightened by a mouse which caused the blaze. The house and contents were lost though two trunks with papers and a sewing machine on the porch survived briefly before burning. Estimated loss about 2500 with 1600 insured.

Luther League Convention to Meet in Pennock

The annual Luther League convention for Swedish Lutheran congregations in the district will take place in Pennock on August 26 and 27. Delegates from various leagues will attend. Willmar’s Hethel church sends Verna Wahlstrand and Florence Freeberg as representatives. Alton Haroldson of Willmar serves as district league treasurer. Musical numbers are planned and the Willmar League will perform during the program. The business meeting is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, a day of services.

Won Tallman Cup by Richard Gratz in final match

Richard Gratz won the Tallman golf cup on Monday after a close final against Dr Porter. The competition had been ongoing and the cup stays with the year’s winner in this annual contest. last year Char Wallin held the cup.

Car Without License Fined in Municipal Court

The lander of Green Lake Township was fined $5 with costs $8.10 in Municipal Court Monday morning after pleading guilty to operating a car without a license.

Passing of Pioneer Woman Mrs Larson of Willmar

Mrs. Andrew Larson, a noted early pioneer woman born Mary Andine Anderson Hovde in Norway, died August 5 at 5 P M in Battle Creek Sanitarium Hospital Michigan after serious internal complications. She arrived in the U S with her parents around age three, settling in Racine Wisconsin.

Mrs. Larson of Willmar Dies After Long Community Service

Mrs. Larson, long a Willmar resident, died after a life devoted to family welfare and public health. Born near Mar Tell, Wisconsin, she worked in millinery and dressmaking in Prescott before marrying Andrew Larson in 1871 and moving to Willmar. She led Kandiyohi County Public Health, supported St. Luke's Church, and left a large family including her husband, daughter Mrs. Tallman, son Archie M. Larson, eight grandchildren, and siblings. Funeral August 10 was led by Rev. S. C. Thorpe with Willmar sextette singing.

Litchfield Man Arrested For Drunk Driving In Spicer

Arthur E. Larson of Litchfield was arrested by Sheriff Peter Bonde in Spicer for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated last Sunday. His car was seized, bail set at sixty dollars, and he later pleaded guilty in municipal court. He received a fine, $58.10 in costs, and a three month license suspension.

Contract Awarded for Salvation Army Barracks

The contract for the new Salvation Army Barracks goes to J.H. Olsen & Co. Building will be brick two stories with an 800 seat auditorium and living flats on the second floor. The old barracks sold for 110 dollars to the Bonham Bros and removed last week. a garage portion remains.

New Home for Hoglund Hardware is Completed

Hoglund Hardware moves into a newly completed two story brick building on Litchfield Avenue between Palace Grocery and Edison Shop. Excavation by Ed Nelson, foundation by John Skotheim, and decorating by John Burnevik preceded a fireproof two story plan with display windows and a large ground floor sales area. The second floor will house six room flats and an additional storeroom as the firm plans expanded service for patrons.

Lightner to compete in Alexandria golf tournament

Miss Eleanor Lightner of St. Paul arrives for a brief visit with D. N. Tallman and Esther Tallman and plans to travel to Alexandria for a tourist open golf tournament. Willmar to Host Next Minnesota Dental Convention

Willmar will host the next annual convention of the West Central District of the Minnesota Dental Association after the Appleton gathering. Dentists Porter Hedin Nixon and Ger tetson from Willmar attended. Dr E G DeMott of Minot conducted a clinic and was formerly of Willmar. Over 100 dentists are expected. Attendance at Appleton reached 58.

Young Boy Fractures Leg After Jump From Table

Loren Anderson five years old son of Miner Anderson fractured his right leg last Saturday afternoon when he jumped off a table at his mine. He was taken to Willmar Hospital for treatment.

State crews begin work on Spicer road project

A Minnesota state crew under Supt. Mathies paces five teams on trunk highway No. 4 Spicer road near Eagle Lake Thompson Hill. Scarifying and smoothing take about six weeks with completion targeted around October 16 and a $10 500 appropriation. The highway was in poor condition previously.

Mail Carrier's Car Fire On Route No 5

Willard Lundquist, a sub carrier on Route 5, reported his Briscoe caught fire two miles north of town. He extinguished the blaze with road dust after a short circuit started the flames. The front of the car burned badly. Back to roundhouse describes strikers and a shoe repair stoppage at the Great Northern roundhouse.

Rivkin Fined In Municipal Court For Driving With Defects

Rivkin was fined $6 and costs totaling $3.10 in municipal court Monday for driving with only two license plates. He pleaded not guilty and the trial was held.

Bennie Jorgenson of Willmar confessedly drowned at Devils Lake Sunday. He was the son of Theodore Jorgenson of Willmar and was formerly of Coleman born 30 years ago. His body will be shipped to Coleman for burial beside his mother. funeral under grandparents' direction. He leaves a father a brother Walter with the National Guard at Lake City and a sister Stella in Coleman.
