Luther College Band Delightful Willmar Concert at Assembly Park

The Luther College Concert Band performed to a packed Willmar crowd, opening with The Mill on the Lake and Durch encore selections including The Sextette from Lucia di Lammermoor. Vivid performances featured Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodie No. 2 and the Star Spangled Banner to close, with the band clearing about $520 after expenses. Traveling sixty five from Granite Falls, they toured with Prof J. C. K. Preus and Prof. Tingelstad, visiting Synod church services and local hosts. Aneta’s Ole Johnson, part of Gov. Hanna’s party, visited Willmar en route from Norway and Europe, greeting S. S. Glarum.

Cokato Beats Willmar In Litchfield Baseball Clash

At Litchfield during a baseball tournament, Cokato defeated Willmar 3 to 1 after a tense nine innings. Swanson starred for Cokato with a home run and RBI, while Willmar rallied in the ninth but fell short. Lefty Henry limited Hutchinson to two hits in the nearby game, and Swanson stole home in a previous win for Waverly. The day featured two thrilling games and a celebratory crowd atmosphere.

Former Harrison Resident Ara Cremated and Sent by Parcels Post

A former Harrison resident Ara Aspinwall died recently in California. His remains were cremated and sent by parcel post to Harrison for burial in the local cemetery where his wife was laid to rest. Henry J. Thoring delivered the remains to J. A. Masters on Route 2 last Saturday.

Protest Against New Motor Costs Sparks Willmar Petition

Willmar Minnesota July 31 1914 petition signed by local business and motor users protests against city Water and Light Commission rule shifting the cost of new motors to users as part of machinery changes at the power house. A later August 6 notice rescinded the first policy and set a new exchange rule. The petitioners demand fair treatment and retention of prior assurances that motor upgrade costs be covered by city funds. The public notice notes widespread support and frames the issue as modernization costs borne by the city plant rather than individual patrons.

French German front in contact with heavy clashes near Verdun

Paris reports the entire front in contact as French forces repel German attacks north of Verdun at Mangiennes and Moncel. French artillery destroyed a German battery and captured three Gatling guns, while German losses were heavy. Lagarde fell to French bayonet in German territory. West Central Minnesota plans the annual Corn and Alfalfa Exposition in Benson from November 26 to 28 1914 on Thanksgiving Day Swift County Home Coming Day. Five thousand dollars in prizes and hundreds of premiums will attract corn and alfalfa growers from the region with local and state speakers and a large barbecue. Officials urge farmers to select prize samples now and submit entries, highlighting the show as a major commercial and promotional event for the counties.
