Local and Personal News Teems with Short Visits and Travel

A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Harvey Montgomery Friday. Numerous residents travel, visit relatives, and host guests across Willmar and nearby towns. Misses Sanderson Daley and many others return from Hawick, Lillie Kortke heads to Green Lake for two weeks, and Rev Manly among Raymond visitors. Many leave for Minneapolis or St Paul, or host gatherings at Crescent Beach. Willmar Seminary interests noted as catalogues proceed, while teachers and instructors move between Willmar and surrounding communities. Local social events include a successful Maccabees hall hop with the Treat orchestra and visits by editors and ministers from neighboring towns.

Willmar Swedish Churches Plan Activities Next Week

Swedish Lutheran and Swedish Mission notes show pastor G Peterson and Rev Theo Paulson leading services in Willmar with youth groups meeting, socials and an ice cream event at John Larson's home in Mamre. The Epworth League holds a meeting, and a July vacation schedule for pulpit supply is listed along with a Montevideo wedding and local accidents.

Lightning Strikes Across County Causing House Fire

A thunderstorm last Thursday night brought lightning that damaged several properties near Eagle Lake and southeast of Spicer. Albert Halvorson’s home saw a bed quilt ignite but all four children escaped unharmed. John Olson’s farm home also suffered damage as shingles and timbers were splintered. A telephone wire near Gamund Sanderson’s residence burned for about 150 feet, while nearby telephone poles were splintered and toppled in the storm. No injuries were reported.

Tragic Train Baby Passes After Long Ailment

A young mother Mrs Katy Wein traveling with her 15 month old daughter Lillian suffered a fatal decline after the train departed Minneapolis. At Litchfield the infant had spasms and death spread across her features as passengers raised funds for aid. The baby died at Willmar and was laid to rest in Catholic cemetery. Mrs Wein travels to Montana following the loss, while freight conductor Richard Hennesy was injured at Howard Lake but recovering with a protective record book in his pocket.

Honored Departing Citizen Surprised at Synod Society

Prof. H. S. Hilleboe and Mrs. Hilleboe were thanked with a sawed oak sideboard at a surprise gathering arranged by the Norwegian Synod Society last Tuesday in Benson. Pastor Peterson gave a speech as about 150 guests celebrated his forthcoming move to Willmar, then the crowd moved to Olson’s lawn for an evening of sociability. Otto Leslie’s family welcomed a daughter last Thursday, while R. R. Sibley, formerly of the city, now in Chicago, spent a week here, representing Copper Creek Mining Co. with his father F. J. Sibley as company secretary in Tucson.

Nordland Norwegian Lutheran Church Destroyed by Storm

A heavy thunderstorm last Thursday night destroyed the Nordland church in Irving. The wooden structure, built in the 1870s, with 30 by 50 feet dimensions and a tower, burned completely costing about four thousand dollars. The congregation, formed in 1868, has no rebuilding plans yet, though services will be held at Adolph Pederson’s residence. The church, a historic landmark for Norwegian Lutherans in Irving and Union Grove, has undergone multiple improvements and became part of the Lutheran Free church after severing ties with the United Church in 1898. Rev. M. M. Midthun of New London serves as current pastor.

Insanity Due to Melancholy In St Johns Youth

Bernhard Thorson age 21 of St Johns was committed to the Fergus Falls state hospital for the insane after a mental decline attributed to melancholy. Sheriff Lundquist escorted him to the hospital, where doctors hope treatment will restore him soon.

New Doctor for Willmar Moves In

Dr. G. C. Hoff formerly of Zumbrote has decided to locate in Willmar joining local professionals. He has leased offices above Ackerman meat market and is a Northwestern University Chicago graduate. He has practiced in Duluth and Zumbrote.

Engine Stalls During Green Lake Boat Skimming Ride

Dr Twitchell and Rev Gatea invited to enjoy skimming on Green Lake in a gasoline launch. The engine proved stubborn and failed to run as winds pushed the craft north toward the Lund cottage, despite patient efforts to repair it. The Green Lake Breeze notes the motor’s unreliability and the calm perseverance of the men.

Old Settler Returns to County After Years Away

George Haselton, an aged attorney, returns to the county after years abroad. At 82 he arrived from New York State where he stayed with relatives, visited Willmar with old friends, then departed to Hawick to live with his sister Mrs L Daniels.

Delightful Outing and Piano Contest in Kandiyohi County

Members of the Women's Institute enjoyed a Saturday excursion to Green Lake with praise for host Mrs Andrew Larson. Social gathering noted with limit lacked only full attendance. A Tallman launch trip was a featured highlight and a civic piano voting contest tallied across the city. A Swedish Mission Church concert under Rev J A Hultman and Paul Hultman drew praise for fine music and Swedish selections. Willmar venues including local lodges and churches were listed alongside a Crow River Medical Association picnic at Lake Koronis hosted by Drs Pilon and Putney Paynesville. Community groups including Masons Swedish Lutherans and the Commercial Club were named with school affiliations.

Willmar Men Winners In Rosebud Land Draw

Among 89 Minnesota claimants at Chamberlain South Dakota Axel Roise and P O Brandvold of Willmar won Rosebud farm claims from 48 Willmar registrants. Brandvold, a Great Northern section man with a large family, plans to move soon to survey land prospects. Roise held claim 812 while Brandvold held 1401. Ole Selin suffers a fractured left tibia from hay-load mishap and remains home as Dr Johnson treats him. a windmill and other property were damaged.

Ten Days for O'Brien in County Jail Fight

A dispute at the depot last Thursday led to Jack Carney and Jobo O'Brien clashing. O'Brien struck Carney after remarks, and was sentenced to 10 days in the county lock-up the following morning. He is aided by Waterman and Emerson, who remain in jail with a stubborn stance.
