Willmar Water and Light Approves Plant Improvements

The Water and Light Commission of Willmar will shortly recommend to the City Council improvements to the city plant. A complete overhaul of poles and wires is planned, with potential new engines and generating dynamos. An expert engineer was hired to inspect the plant, and his findings will guide the proposed plans to boost efficiency and earnings while aiming to reduce rates. Seminary Baseball Opens Season at Local Park

The Seminary baseball team plays Kerkhoven this Saturday at the local park in the season opener. The game offers fans a chance to gauge the team’s prospects for the coming year and supporters are encouraged to attend. The high school may schedule an out of town game this week as well.

Hay Market Established In Willmar City Streets

Mayor Wellin leads a push to beautify Willmar by abolishing street stabling and hitching posts. The city leases the old mill lot for a hay market with entrances from Pacific Henson and Seventh streets. Wind-break billboards will shield teams from traffic as three public barns provide affordable stable space. The new policy bans tying horses to electric poles to improve safety and city appearance.

The Junior Class of the local high school presented How the Vote Was Won at the high school auditorium on April 12. Gerald Geer and Rose O'Neil led a strong cast in a play about suffrage humor, followed by entertaining specialties including Homer Chase and Myrtle Porter in Old Sweethearts and Professor Pokuses on the pipe organ. Receipts topped $54 as the evening blended student talent with light social commentary.

Public servant rests in Atwater peace

The body of Hon. Hices Emil Johnson lay in state at the Swedish M E church in Atwater after arrival from St Paul. A funeral service led by Rev. B C Edwards featured hymns and prayers with remarks on the deceased’s character. The burial occurred at Atwater Union Cemetery as county officials and residents paid tribute.

Great Northern gravel pit opens near New London

Monday the Great Northern road began gravel pit work at New London with 80 workers and special trains to haul ballast along the Sioux City line. The project, expected to last six weeks, provides extra employment mostly for Italian laborers and boosts railroad activity in the area.
