Fake death tale in Ohio shown as authorityless hoax
The story of Frank Herzig’s supposed death and murder confession is exposed as a major fake. Investigators from the Scripps-McRae Press Association found no Byers or Herzig, and no deaths by own action in Hiddenwood or Wallace County. J A Heiner, once Minot Optic editor, allegedly spurred the tale from Texas origins but lacked local plausibility. The Fargo Forts notes say Heiner had worked on multiple papers across the West and planned similar plots in Fargo.
