Work of the Mississippi and its colossal land-building power
A Longman’s Magazine description explains the Mississippi floods port land from the mountains, forming 400,000 square miles of new land by filling estuaries. It floods the gulf with 362,000,000 tons yearly, creating land up to ten yards deep, with soils transported over thousands of miles at prodigious cost. The delta meanders for about 1,200 miles, eroding and building anew while sometimes breaching necks to fill old channels.
