Bowbells Declared Burke County Seat by Court

The North Dakota Supreme Court ruled Bowbells is the county seat of Burke County after a four year litigation saga led by Attorney Geo A Bangs. The decision ends most challenges to Bowbells as seat and summarizes prior rulings on Mountrail Renville and Kenmare vote validity and county organization.

Express Ready Hour Earlier Expands to All Express Lines

Beginning last Sunday morning, express packages must reach the express office an hour before train departure under an Interstate Commerce Commission regulation. Packages must bear collect or prepaid stamps and pass through the office, preventing rush stamping and carriage with no stamp. Express companies enforce the rule to ensure proper stamping before loading.

515 Claims Left in Berthold Indian Reservation

After the opening of the Berthold reservation last year 850 people filed among 1365 total claims. Judge James W. Witten announced the last name. 516 claims will open to general entry October 1 with a 90 day filing window for residents who establish a residence and begin improvements, gaining preference over others.

New Pastor E S Shaw and Family Arrive in Williston

Rev E S Shaw and family arrived Friday and settled into a new parsonage at 615 1st St West. The six member family includes two girls and four boys. the eldest will supply a mission at Coulee and the second will reenter Faroff College in two days. He preached two sermons Sunday and attended Sunday school and Christian Endeavor meetings. Services will be held at the usual hours next Sunday.

Busy Start for New Register Thomas Murphy

Thomas B Murphy took on his duties immediately after notification and began work last Friday morning. His furniture arrived by week’s end as he settled into the new office and home. Mrs Murphy, their son, and sister Blanch Murphy arrived Tuesday evening aboard No 3. Miss Murphy leaves today for Minneapolis and will visit Minot and Fargo before returning home.

President Elliott Coming to North Dakota Exposition

President Howard Elliott and other Northern Pacific officials will visit Bismarck for the second annual Industrial Exposition on October 10, labeled Northern Pacific Day. The railway has doubled its space from last year and expects the exhibits to bring substantial benefit to the state.

Price of Coal Will Be Probed

Washington reports a full inquiry into coal prices will be issued by December 2. Commissioner Charles P. Neill will investigate how much consumers pay, why costs rose amid the anthracite strike, and how miners benefited from the deal. The probe also refers to a Sherman anti trust suit against railroads and coal companies linked to a prior strike settlement.

Great crop on Hagan farm yields high per acre

The Hagan farm sold to the Howard brothers last year harvested a superb crop with wheat at about 30 bushels per acre and oats around 75. The 480 acre farm is largely cultivated and expected to produce the county’s largest crop, about 6500 bushels of wheat and 3500 of oats, valued near 6200.00 at current prices. Heffernan farm nearby yielded 90 bushels per acre.

Plow Early for Better Crops and Weed Control

Agricultural editor W. C. Palmer urges plowing as early as possible with disking two to three weeks prior. Discing buries weed seed and mixes stubble with soil to promote germination and destruction by plowing. Early fall plowing often yields better crops than spring plowing, given time constraints.

London states the British foreign office has not committed to arbitration on Panama canal tolls. Taft rescinds order to send Tenth Infantry to Nicaragua

President Taft, en route to Columbus, cancelled his 12 hour old directive ordering the immediate dispatch of the Tenth Infantry from Panama to Nicaragua. He said a sufficient marine force would reach Managua and Corinto next week to protect American lives and property.
